hardcoe Travelling

Post » Tue Sep 07, 2010 5:51 am

Hi,

I have read up a fair amount about hardcoe mode and it does interest me as it seems similar to mods i used in FO3.

However, due to lack of information (and the fact the search on this site is awful) I can't find a definate answer to one question:

Can you use fast travel in hardcoe mode?

This is the decider for me to use hardcoe mode or not. While I do like to wander about alot, sometimes it is a major chore if you need to go halfway across the map for the umpteenth time, especially due to my gaming time being quite limited theses days.

So does anyone know if you can fast travel?

Thanks,

Oh you do not know the many threads we have on this.

It is finally confirmed that you will have fast travel in hardcoe mode.

I haven't seen anything that specifically stated the there wouldn't be FT with hardcoe, so I would assume that you can still use that feature.

I hear ya, though. I ran a few games on FO3 with FT disabled, and it was definitely a hindrance. It made the game more challenging, but I have a lot of free time.

Iknowitsonlyagamebut: doesn't make sense that you can RUN for hours, from one end of the map to the other, through day and night, without at least 10 min break to catch your breath. At least with FastTravel time passes, and you kind of assume that you walked there, rested, ate etc along the way.

I think you should be forced to stop, or at least walk, after running for 30 minutes. Bizarre. It's like doing a marathon every day or something

I thought there would be plenty of threads on this, but like I mentioned, the search on this site is awful. I put in 'hardcoe' or 'travel' and then set it to advanced search to search only the correct forum and topics titles only, no results! I wish they would sort out this forum, its slow, search doesn't work well and the search flood control is just a *little* annoying!

Anyway, thanks for the answer, looks like hardcoe it is for me!

Agreed the search bar here is awful, yeah I was hoping for no fast travel.

But luckily theres a solution to that: Don't use it! :D

In hardcoe mode, fast travel only works if you won't die due to dehydration/starvation/etc. during the time it takes to get there. So there are *some* limitations on it.

so you have to be physically able to fast travel before you can do it? Seems more realistic. Thanks Jason.

Thanks! This is good to know. I like the added realism and challenge of hardcoe mode, but fast travel is still a conveniance I prefer to have. This is awesome! :goodjob:

I'd rather walk to be perfectly honest. I love the scenery and Easter eggs that you see just by walking in the Fallout universe. Not to mention the amount of Ammo, armour, meds, weapons, junk, locations, ect that you find just by doing a bit of exploring.

I see. And I guess the hunger/thirst meters will have been lowered by the time you get there too, for another realistic measure?

Yes. If you travel a long distance you are likely to have your H20/FOD/SLP meters lighting up when you get to your destination.

Awsome sauce. But where will the meters be? On the HUD or pipboy?

The PipBoy shows exact values (as with RAD in F3), but the HUD has pop-ups for general "danger".

When you hit the first level of badness, the three letter abbreviation will pop up but be dim and HUD-colored. So if your HUD is set to blue and you hit Minor Dehydration, it's a dark blue, semi-opaque H20.

When you hit the second level, it's normal HUD color, fully opaque. No messin' around, get some H20.

At the third level, it turns red. At the fourth level, it slowly pulses red. At the fifth level... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6U7rOUSvYM8#t=6s

There are five abbreviations that can show up on the HUD: H20, FOD, SLP, RAD, and LMB. With limbs the color changes as more of your limbs are crippled. Just in case you forget that your torso, both legs, and both arms are piles of mush.

So the earth gets pulled into the moons gravitational pull and we explode?

Epic. :D

In Fallout 3 I don't use fast travel while I'm actively doing quests, but I use it to collect my loot stashes to bring back to my house and sell/trade.

Awsome sauce. But where will the meters be? On the HUD or pipboy?

What I saw when I played it at QuakeCon, on the status page of the Pipboy there are three new pages, like J. E. Sawyer said, H20, FOD and SLP. They looked just like the meter on the RAD page. I only turned hardcoe mode on for a few minutes, since they gave you so much gear and ammo, you couldn't move, so I turned it off rather than figure out what to drop.

What I want to know is at what rate they deplete. Do water, food and sleep reserves deplete based on the game's time scale or real time. Do they deplete at a fixed rate, or do they depend on your activity level? I play on PC, and I set the timescale to 12 (2hr day) vs. the default of 30 (48min day).

How realistic is it? When your food, water or sleep is depleted, do you just die instantly or incur some penalty? Realistically a person in good shape can go several weeks without food before dying, but only a couple of days without water. But that's just sitting around, not doing a lot of running around in a desert, carrying hundreds of pounds of loot. In hot desert conditions, being active, you could dehydrate in a matter of hours without water, but still go a few days without food before killing over dead.

Can some items like Nuka Cola (caffeine) or chems (jet, psycho) prolong your sleep needs?

Awsome thanks for the confirmation. Now that will be cool, although ill travel myself for the most part i will use fast travel to cross the entier wasteland, but you ought to discover the location first.

I will only use it to avoid tedious and unnecessary play. If I feel like the trek back to a previous location might result in me being challenged, or if I think there might be one little unexplored morsel of land over there, I won't use fast travel.
