Cabaret clothing.

Post » Tue Jun 15, 2010 4:49 pm

I just got an invitation for a party with a cabaret theme. I intend to go, but how do you dress cabaret as a man?
I thought you guys could have some fun and find some crazy cabaret themed mens clothing to inspire me.

At first I thought monocle or pocketwatch. But that doesn't represent cabaret as much as a time period.
Anyway, ideas? :)

Clearly, the only answer is to go as a woman.

A quick google search suggests a black and white suit with a bow tie and a top hat.

I thought cabaret was liek a variety performance. It could be any number of different things, with no set theme or style.

And a top hat, have to have some class.

Seriously though, suit, bow tie, top hat, and cane.

I have a vest, that'll do. Too warm for a suit. I'll need to get a bowtie though, regular ties are banned.
A cane is a good idea, should be able to find something cheap at a costume/joke shop or something.

I've decided to buy a pipe or a few cigars as well. Hat would be great too, but I'm afraid it'll be hard finding a cheap one (unless I buy one from thick paper).

@Turns: I'm guessing "cabaret themed" is just another way of saying "Moulin Rouge themed" really. But I can't be arsed to watch that movie again.

Wear a suit. If it's too warm get a cooler fabric than wool or just wear your suit, then take off the jacket when you get there. You'll probably want to wear a pocket square as well (don't match it with a tie and just wear white linen if you can't think of anything). The Tie Bar has a good selection of bowties.

Just wear a black suit (three piece, maybe?), white bowtie, and white pocket square. A hat and cane for more of a costumey look if you want. If you really want to, it looks like they were wearing tuxes in Moulin Rouge, but I doubt you have one of those lying around (maybe just a dinner jacket without matching trousers could work, too, but you'd still need a cummerbund).

Top hat plus a cane and you're all set. Throw in a black bowtie for good measure.

Yeah, I would imagine a circus type look is one you would want to achieve.

To Rohugh BGSF is one big 24/7 cabaret show.

Dress like you're the piano player. Any color suit without the jacket, light colored shirt and thin tie, those goofy armbands or suspenders, and a stogie.

At my uni cabaret just meant a party. There were some with no theme, along with holiday and specific themed ones. I don't really understand what a cabaret theme means.
