Rift

Post » Thu Jun 17, 2010 3:30 am

Since the game finally came out with a free trial I figured I'd give it a go. The rifts themselves are really cool/fun and a nice break from constant quest-grinding. The class/role system is also alot deeper than most other MMOs.
Not sure if I wanna spend $50 on it though.

There's a thread a bit back comparing it to WoW but it wasn't really a discussion so I made this.

Anyone actually a subscriber?

I looked it up when it first came out, thought it looked interesting. Glad to hear there's finally a free trial, I'll probably give it a go also. I just got talked back into WoW however, but who knows if I'll actually get into it. I hope Rift has more staying power than all the old "WoW killers", I could really use something new to mix it up. I hear it suffers from a bit of WoW clone syndrome though, and that's rarely a good thing.

Would love to hear what any subscribers/ex WoW players have to say.

My mates got rift and its a good game. But, I'm not playing £40 on a game then have to pay a mouthy fee. I wouldn't mind as much if I didn't have to pay for the game and just did the fee (like Runescape). Or just pay for the game then thats it (Like Call of Duty). But having to buy a game then have to pay money just to pay for the game you just bought is dumb.

Thats why I wont get Rift

Since my WoW sub is up for now until I get paid, I'll try out this trial.
EDIT: How many servers are there exactly? And I'm guessing there are PvP oriented ones like WoW or no? If anyone wants to start a new trial character on the same server, just pm me.

Rift is now my second-favourite MMO, though that might be due to the novelty factor. Then again, it's pretty much WoW with Guild Wars and Warhammer Online mixed into it, all of which I consider adequate. The soul system is grand, and I can't play anything other than Defiants, being the massive svcker for Steampunk I am. ^_^

That's the whole client it's downloading. Did you expect those few megabytes of setup file would contain the whole game? ^_^

Yes. I mean an 8gb game? That's just nonsense. No, I'm an idiot.

Ah, don't be so harsh on yourself. You just had a short phase being... attention-impaired. ^_^

The full game is 15gb, not 8.

It says so in the system requirements, but it's still only 8.8 gigabytes on my disk. That's probably just for patching purposes.

Yeah, I bought it last week. I love it. If anyone is on the fence about getting it, I'd say do it. In essence, it's WoW with better graphics, animations, story, and PvE (IMHO). So if you liked that, you'll like this.

There's only what, 6 races and they all look the same.

I dare say that's not the case. Dwarves and Kelari could hardly be much more different. The only ones that look a little too close are the two human factions. But that's to be expected.

There are a ton of servers, I don't know the exact number but they could definitely combine some of them.

And no, the races are very different. There's extensive customization to your PC as well.

I'm fairly sure they will reduce the number at some point. They were enough to accommodate all first day players, which is not a good sign since many of those will get back into the arms of dear Blizzard after the free month.

Also, since the latest patch: Costume equipment. Heck yeah. I even saved that nice Kelari leather armour from the village in the Freemarches. That, combined with goggles, is just badass cuteness on my little sharpshooter. ^_^

I couldn't help watching TotalBiscuit playing this game and being immediately put off by it, it is essentially WoW "Realistic": Reloaded, and I am not looking for another game with the same style of play (I have WoW, that's enough :D).

Still I may try the trial when I get the computer back, just to drop a few hours in it myself.

Played WoW from ORGINAL release date till Cata Release date with only a small 2 month gap in the middle of Burning Crusade. Raided with one of the top guilds on my server for a long time. Loved WoW till they killed it with Cata.

Played Rift for about the last month after a long break to find my soul and finally finish a project I started 7 years ago. Liked it to begin with until I just started seeing elements of every other MMO that I have played. UI and gameplay from WoW, quests from Everquest and Guild Wars. It all just got to repetive for me. MMO's have had there time at the top, time for them to take a back seat now and let some other games come to the fore front.

IGN has deluxe edition on sale for 50% off today, so I bought it for $29.

edit: It's on IGN's site, but it's really D2D.

Played WoW since it's beta. Dropped that game just before Wrath of Lich King. Played Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, and a few others. Now enjoying founder sub for Rift.

Rift is fun if you like the constant movement of extraplanar invasion. The game has far more solid and consistant storyline, but the dialogue scripts and voice acting are amatuer, sometimes I wonder if they were written by English speakers to begin with.

Anyway, the soul system is the thing that attracts me most. 4 callings (essentially classes), with 8 souls each (essentially talent trees). New abilities on each soul are gained only if you put enough points in there, each with different playstyle so you essentially can have 32 playstyles not counting the even spec. Another is the multi spec. You can have 2 spec in WoW, but in rift you can have 5. So say someone dropped out in the mid of dungeon, you can get a guy in there to fill up his role with just changing the role. This makes dungeon raiding very flexible. Warriors can range dps with riftblade or straight up tank. Rogues can be dps, tank or support (Bard). Mages can be dps, heal or support. Clerics can be tank, dps or heal. You won't get the craps like "if you don't do this you svck" in WoW, you just change and adapt.

Its overall gameplay however is just like any other MMORPGs out there, nothing special. Go there kill that, go there use item, go there fetch that. It added some dynamic pve actions with rifts. Like Warhammer Online public quests spred over the map. A lot of the game is based on vanilla WoW, so if you are the kind who think WoW was good back then you may enjoy it. Trion is made up of former developers of many MMORPGs, so it's no suprise you could find the shadows of the old titles in this product.

That's kinda where I'm at too. I never got into WoW for the same reason. I never know how much time I'm actually going to have to play games from month-to-month. Some months I get almost no time at all. I'm not paying $15/month for something I'm not using. It's not even much money...I just won't do it on principle. If I could buy play-time by the hour I might consider it.

If my comp could handle it I'd be playing Rift. I enjoyed the beta, but it barely ran on bare minimum specs.

Necro/warlock was my favorite character, and I had paragon/champion (I think those are the classes) that dual wielded.

I haven't played WoW in months now and have no desire to again. It's like someone on the Rift forums said in beta: "I think Regulos is cooler than Deathwing. He unleashed the shade; all Deathwing did is cause me to stop playing."

I am! I've been playing quite a bit on Perspice. I tried the WoW trial but wasn't interested so I really could't tell you the similarities. It's just awesome. There's so much going on all the time. One moment you're running around doing a quest or gathering stuff for crafting and the next moment you're jumping in a raid to fight off an invasion... it's crazy, I love it.
