It's not Umaril's sword anymore (named unique items)

Post » Sun Jun 20, 2010 2:52 am

Anyone else get a little irritated when they take some character's unique sword/shield/not spear and the thing still has their name on it? Examples include: "Umaril's Sword", the "Escutcheon of Chorrol," "Rugdumph's Sword" and the "Sword of Jyggalag." It's cool that there's a backstory for these weapons but the player has probably already experienced the backstory to get these items and they're no longer the possessions of those characters. It's especially annoying when that item is already enchanted and you can't rename it by enchanting it with something else (this is another annoyance in itself). As default names, these are all fine. I just think it'd be cool if we were given the option to rename unique items when they come into our possession instead of hauling around "Steve's Rusty Stabbing Knife" hours after killing Steve. Thoughts?

Weapon names are the least interesting aspect of them and I couldn't care less. Honestly its a name in a menu...

It's called enchanting. It lets you rename items.
Or, rename it through the CS.
Why should every item just magically change names though?

Most of the unique weapons tend to use a mesh and icon that's also used by the standard weapons, so the only way to show the difference is by name (unless you want to check the stats each time).

I see what you're saying, but I completely disagree. They are unique items, and have a unique name already. Just because you took them should not change their legendary name. Why would I want to change Mehrune's Razor or Umaril's Sword? That's where it came from, that's what it is.

And when you create a unique item by enchanting, you give it its unique name.

Idk, I get what you're saying but I like it the way it is.

I prefer it to keep there old name... it then acts as a trophy as well as a weapon... hey look i killed Umaril and here's his sword

In the game, you're creating that history and are probably going to do greater things (killing dragons) with these items that the previous guy was using them for. I think that gives you the right to rename them. Also, I find it difficult to show enough reverance to a video game character to merit keeping the name of his sword. It'd just be an option anyway, you can still call it by it's original name if you want. It's just another option for roleplayers who favor a weapon but don't want "Mike Hawke's Long Blade" written on the side of it for the whole game.

I wouldn't say it irritates me, but the ability to rename non-quest items -- and spells, for that matter -- would be a nice feature (particularly for the console people, I presume). I doubt it'll make it into Skyrim though.

I don't think you should be allowed to rename Legendary weapons for the same reasons as many have stated above me. However I do agree that calling Umaril's Sword 'Umaril's Sword' is quite unimaginative and that a weapon's name should reflect its origins, not it's previous owner.
