Buying from stores

Post » Thu Jun 24, 2010 2:11 pm

This is an idea I had way back when in the 90's when Fallout 2 was in the works.. I don't think its an original idea for a game but to this day I'd like to see it implemented in a game.

If I go into a weapon store to buy a new sword, wouldn't you think it would be better to actually have to grab the item from the shelf and place on the counter. The NPC would say how much it costs and you'd drop the required money on the counter or in his hand. Or maybe just clicking "purchase item" on a dialogue window that pops up.

Now that games like Oblivion and Skyrim have physics in their engine I don't see how this couldn't be done. They already have items on display in cabinets and on benches in Oblivion. Wouldn't it be awesome if they were more than just decoration, and instead would be what the store is actually selling.

What do you guys think?

well actually im pretty sure you just dont grab the sword off the counter and buy it like thsi is a convenience store. IM almost sure you would pay a smith to make one for you, and days later you would come back and he would have it crafted for you.

I don't mean to drop the F-bomb here, but isn't that what Fable tried to do?

I'm sure Beth could do it better, but it just feels... unnecessary.

Last time I brought up something simular to this someone said that theres no point in anything but a menu. I think it would be nice to have something simular to how zelda sells things or let you walk up to items around the shop.

It's a nice idea, a realistic one at that, but I just don't think it will work well for a video game. I can't imagine a player wanting to buy every item by virtually grabbing and dropping them all, it'd be long and frustrating for me.

Maybe for smiths. But I'd like to see this happen in other stores as well.

Fable.. not really. I'm more interested in grabbing the item and taking it to the shopkeeper and still have interactions with him. Not just "click a to buy this item" :)

No I don't want to be fiddling around picking up items and dropping items in order to buy something - a fairly standard UI bartering type menu is much simpler and quicker. I am for realism in certain respects, but not to the point where I become a button-mashing slave to it. Also a sword is not a can of beans, most shops do not let you pick up expensive items, they are locked in cabinets and you ask the shopkeeper to show it to you if you are interested in buying.

That might get tedious after a while... if you buy a lot of stuff. What about if you still had to browse the shelves, and still selected the item you want that way... but get the option to buy right there. That way you can still browse items and such, but you don't have to bring them up and set them on the counter.

I like my menu. Why make the stores 10 times bigger to hold all the items and make it take 5 times as long to shop when I can buy all the alchemy ingredients from a store in like a minute? I hope it is more like Fallout 3 where you click things once (with right click to automatically buy all the stock they have) and it goes to your inventory but the sale doesn't finalize until you press a specific button.

When I actually buy at a store, I buy big. I won't spend hours dragging objects onto a counter.

System might work well in a simpler game where you just buy a couple of thing during the game. but not here where you sell 30 loot items and buy a stack of arrows, multiple stacks of ingredients and other items.
I want fallout 3 shopping basket, stopped the "are you sure you want to sell" * 100, just show total weight so you don't end up with more than you can carry.
You actually asked the shopkeeper to bring you items in a grocery store in the old days, much because fewer items was pre packed,

I'd like something like this. I liked how Fable 3 displayed items for sale. It's too bad that most shops in that "game" only had about four things for sale.

This seems like an unnecessary addition. As others have pointed out, it's going to get really tedious, really quickly, when you have to buy five hundred different items from a store.

Late-ish in Elder Scrolls games when I'm swimming in money, I like to buy up all the alchemical ingredients I can find and hide them in my house(s). It's not going to be much fun for me if I have to pick every last leaf and flower and dump them on the table.

Why buy it, when you can just steal it.
