How do I find my install path directory?

Post » Wed Jul 07, 2010 11:43 pm

Hi everyone

This is probably a simple fix but Im still having trouble-

I want to run TES4 LODgen and TweakOblivion, but neither can find the Oblivion installation path- Wrye Bash and OBMM work fine, and so does Oblivion itself. Where do I go to check it? My path is C:\Oblivion

I have reinstalled Tweak Oblivion to C:\, it now crashes after I start it- I have also tried running TES4Lodgen from the Oblivion file, and still get the Fatal: Could not determine Oblivion installation path error.

Anyway Id appreciate any help- Thanks!

Did you move Oblivion after installing it? The path should really be "C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion"

I can't find Oblivion in the registry (most games you can change the install path there), so I'm not sure how to help you.

Hey Nat
Thanks for the reply. I originally installed to C:\ to avoid the UAC problems in Vista. Everything works fine, I just to know where in the .ini does it specify the install path? Or somewhere else? I just need to know how to tell LODGen and tweakOblivion to find the Oblivion directory...

Thanks, everyone!

You installed to C:\ ?! Um. Not a great idea, if that is really what you did.

Anyway, no idea what "TweakOblivion" even is, but TES4LODGen automatically detects where Oblivion is installed - no need to "tell it". Same goes for many mod utilities and stuff, in fact.

I think it is a fine idea. Many people here would agree. But as said, TES4LODGen should automatically find your install directory. Did you actually install to C: or did you just move your oblivion folder after installing somewhere else?

Um, no. No-one on here has ever agreed with such an insane notion, that I have seen.

C:\Games\Oblivion, or the like? Oh, sure. Just C:\ though? Hell, no.

No Idea what tweakoblivion is? really?. TES4 LOD Gen is SUPPOSED to automatically find the file path. It is NOT. I Installed Oblvion to C:/, I didnt move it there.

Everything worked fine until I cleaned up my desktop, TES4 LODGen worked too (yes, with the C:\Oblivion file path)
Now I get "Fatal: Could not determine Oblivion installation path"
Ill say again, everything works fine, Oblvion has less crashes in the C:\ file path,

My question is:

Is there a setting, an ini, that has the installation file path in it and can allow it to be changed?

It doesn't matter where you install it as long as it is not the program files directory.

Yes, really. Never used it, never seen it, never heard of it. Until now, that is. And I've been using hundreds of mods for a while now. And been on these forums for long enough, I would've thought...

If you can even install literally to just C:\ (as opposed to C:\Oblivion, say) it would be an extremely bad idea to do so. I'll just leave it at that, else I could see this going around in pointless circles for however long...

Well the installer automatically creates the Oblivion folder (doesn't it? I'm not sure now), so yes it would end up in C:\Oblivion. TweakOblivion is just a program that lets you edit the ini. I've never used it either.

Open Regedit (I don't remember how to do it in Vista/7, I'm on XP right now).

-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
-SOFTWARE
-Bethesda Softworks
-Oblivion

In the right pane, you should see an entry called (Default), and Install Path. Right click Install Path, modify, and the path you see should be the place you installed it to. If it isn't, change it.

If you don't see an entry called Install Path, create one by right clicking the same pane that you see (Default) in, Select New > String Value, name the string "Install Path" (without quotes), right click it, modify, type "C:\\Oblivion" (or wherever your Oblivion.exe and Data folder is. Again without quotes, mind the double slash).

Thank you! I was about to ask how to modify the registry for this- I did what you suggested, minding the double slash, double checked it, and still get the same error-

the OBMM config ini (maybe its the Wrye Bash ini?) has this:

[GENERAL]
language=English
update=3
path=C:\Oblivion

so I know the path is correct.

The registry has a subheading under Oblivion called 1.00.0000- should the install path go there?

Thanks much for your help...

I'm not entirely sure. I installed Oblivion on Windows 7 and had the same problem you did when I decided to test it's performance in Windows XP. I created a registry entry under the Oblivion key like I said in my previous post, but there wasn't a 1.00.000 key.

I'm guessing you're on XP? If so I should probably switch back, lol. But like I said that's how I pointed TESLODGEN in the right place, gonna try scanning the regristry for some more info.

Edit: the key and entry is the same on 7, just in a different location. On my installation regristry, the 1.00.000 key is empty. I'm not sure what other advice I can give you.. :unsure2:

Well I certainly appreciate your advice. Im actually on Vista-thus the issue of having to install away from program files.

YES! I got it to work- I noticed other install paths in the registry were called "Installed path" I changed this, plus the double \\ to a single \ and it worked!

Ah glad to hear B)

Yeah, as I look through 7's registry, it uses single slashes too. Guess the double slash is an XP thing. Sorry about the confusion, glad it's working.
