A couple questions that somehow confuses me

Post » Thu Jul 08, 2010 10:38 pm

I see tamriel mentioned a lot through out the games and I'm wondering something. It is my understanding that Nirn is the planet all this takes place on. Cyrodiil, Morrowind, Skyrim, elsweyr, hammerfell and the sommerset isles are all part of tamriel. Now is Tamriel a single continent, and if it is, then what about the rest of Nirn? Are there others and what ones are they? I recall hearing about the race that had to deal with dragons, somesort of a monkey type race, then the Akavir and many others. My other question is, what chance would we see tes games exploring these new lands? Surely Mehrunes dagon's assault on cyrodiil had to been felt worldwide, if so what were the effects.

Read http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Nirn page. The bar on the bottom lists every one of the lands we know about so far. You can also view http://www.imperial-library.info/maps/minibigmaproadslore31gv.jpg fan-made map (from http://www.imperial-library.info/maps/) that accurately displays what every land we have maps of looks like. And you can read http://www.imperial-library.info/pge3/other_lands.shtml to read most of what we know about the known other lands.

As for exploring the other lands, it depends. Exploring Akavir is a big no-no. You know that feeling you get when you think "I wonder what's there?," Well that's there for a reason; so that Nirn seems like a real place. Just like we wonder what other planets would be like to visit, wondering what Akavir is like makes Nirn seem more real. Visiting the lands on the map I linked to may be okay, because they're so small and nearby, but they all exist for the sole purpose of adding realism to the world.

And as for the Oblivion crisis, I don't know if other lands were affected by it, but they may have been. Other people will know more about that than I do. But I'm pretty sure Dagon's main target was Tamriel, as it's sort of the center of everything.

Part of me would like to see a game where we explore Akavir, but another part of me is firmly against it for the reasons posted above..it's the final frontier of Nirn..it's the "exotic far East" of that world. It is a place of legend and myth. It would ruin a lot of the intrigue if we could see it. It's kinda like that debate that film makers have about how much of the monster you wanna show...if you don't show the monster at all, it builds up a lot of suspense and your imagination can take over...but you hunger for more knowledge. You show too much of the monster and it's no longer scary or interesting. Like Jason Voorhees...we've all seen him a million times. The suspense is gone. You gotta strike a balance. We've seen their weapons, some of their armor...we have a few stories about them. One or two of them even ruled as de facto Emperor before. I think that's enough.

Thanks for the info. I agree that yes there needs to be some mysteries left in the world. Just there's somethings I don't fully recall being mentioned or shown. There's some areas basically within the main continent where all this took place, that I'd like to see in future games. As there are many secrets in cyrodiil, left to be uncovered. Possibly all of tamriel, in some sense, I could see the Ayleids having moved elsewhere, Some somehow became the bosmers that we have now.. lets face it, Can we point out a single "sane" bosmer? It could be the proverbial backlash from the ayleids being dethroned. Would kind of make sense to me. Then again some of the high elves aren't exactly stable.. infact there's a few cases I think that the dunmer, bosmer, and altmer somehow were affected by the Ayleids defeat and probably caused a level of mental instability. Of course there's the dwemer which for all intent and purpose as far as I understand are basically all but non existant.

I think the biggest problem that it seems now, is what will be tamriel's next big enemy. Cyrodiil faced dagon and threats of the Ayleids, morrowind had their problems. hammerfel theirs.

You should read the Infernal City. There are plenty of problems going on in Tamriel right now. Asides from an evil soul stealing flying city called Umbriel, the Empire is under threat from the Thalmor, a nationalistic Elven society with designs on another Aldmeri Dominion. Also, someone assassinated the Mane of the Khajiit, possibly weakening the barriers between Nirn and Oblivion again. Could it be that the Mythic Dawn is still hard at work, trying to create a pathway for Lord Dagon to invade?

I reject the idea that Dagon invaded other places apart from Tamriel. This takes a kind of multi-centrality theory, arguing that Tamriel is the center of the world until you go to Akavir or even further out into other unknown territories, where they are the center of the world.

We have established that Elves have established Towers in at least one extra-Tamriel location and circumspect evidence of another (the Maormer in Pyandonea). Towers stabilize and root things in a rather localized area. Red Mountain doesn't have much influence over High Rock that we can really see, but it did contribute to the barriers against Oblivion. Now, it seemed to be a contributing effect in a given area. What's stopping it from only effecting it's own "center of the world?" If Dagon really wanted to take Tamriel off guard, he'd target out-lying Towers like in Pyandonea. Then invade Tamriel with no warning and no hope of stopping him unless they sailed down to Pyandonea.
