Post » Sun Jul 18, 2010 5:36 am

Ummm i was just wondering if when i "purchased" my preorder from steam a few months back, they would have already charged me or if they will charge me when the game is actually released?

I know i could find out via steam but i thought you guys would know and be much quicker.

Thanks

check your creditcard bill?

Pre-orders of physical copies don't usually get charged until they ship, no idea about steam, I would assume the same (there are consumer laws etc etc)

Can't you simply check with your credit/debit card bill?
That said, AFAIK, yeah, you should have already paid.

Well, considering it's called pre-purchasing when you pre-order on Steam, I'm fairly certain that yes, you have.

Actually, there is no legal reason as to why a company can not charge before an item ships. However, most legitimate companies do not do this, unless you are special ordering something that is unique or rare or not something the company usually sells. Even then, most legitmate places will just take a deposit. The reason is, it costs money for the retailer to refund money, not just in transaction costs, but in percent on the dollar fees charged by the CC Company in both directions.

Now, I would be wary of places that charge in full before they ship, as most of those places will take your money real fast, but be real slow on order fulfilment, if they do it at all. Some New York Camera shops were notorious for this, selling things at real low prices, taking your money for an order, then not shipping it.

Some companies use your money to order from their suppliers though, they arn't always scamming you, some just don't have items stockpiled they simply take orders and then forward the deliveries on to the buyer.

Here the company you buy stuff from reserve the amount you paid via card until you get the item(s) then they can have it

That would be a Special Order situation, or a Drop Ship scenario. However even then, I would be leary, not necessarily to the point of opting out of the transaction, of anyone that requires payment in full before an item ships. I would research the company first to see if anyone has complaints. As you say, sometimes you do have to pay the full amount up front before something ships. However, most on going retailers will want a deposit, not a full payment for this.

Gamestop or other stores can have you pay the full amount of the Pre-Order or just put down a deposit, but they give you a choice up front. At least they did the last time I pre-ordered a game from them. In those cases, I am comfortable paying the full amount up front because then in two months it is kind of like getting a free game as I paid for it several paychecks ago.

I'm pretty sure you were charged when the transaction occurred.
