Head of Lore needed

Post » Fri Jul 30, 2010 5:58 am

Hi,

I know it is a little bit weird to post a job offer for a Morrowind Mod in the Lore Section, but I guess it is the place for it.

We need something like a "Head of Lore"...A person with a big knowlegde of Elder Scrolls Lore and the motivation to share his knowledge with us to make Skyrim - Home of the Nords as Lore correct as possible.

You don't need any CS Skills or something.

Here is the link to the latest Project Thread if you are interested:

A quick tip, Most 'lore buffs' just look at the Imperial Library a lot, so you don't exactly need a "head of lore", just a bookmark.

Wrong. You need someone who at least knows what the hell they're talking about. Anyone can look at the Imperial Library all day. It takes a creative mind to transfer that knowledge into awesome and worthy material.

Thanks, that statement exactly hit the bull's eye :goodjob:

Aw, just make threads in this forum, we've (or, at least, I've) not had anything exciting to talk about in a few weeks.

Worldbuilding Experience is not necessary, take a look...

But it's important to know everything about well known buildings or guilds in the citys, about important ruins and dungeon (except Labyrinthian) and everything else that could be relevant for Skyrim.

Worldbuilding in the sense of the real world into which your mod provides but a glimpse. ;)

The point is that "everything about well known buildings or guilds in the citys, about important ruins and dungeon (except Labyrinthian) and everything else that could be relevant for Skyrim" really does just require a link to TIL. Because that's all that is 'known' (and it's not really very much).

Why is this so hard? Yeah, a link to TIL would give all the info, but it wouldn't be of much help. Granted, all the stuff on the Provinces is pretty mundane (seems people only care about metaphysical bullcrap), but it would help them out to have a lore buff sort through all the stuff to get the juicy bits.

There isn't that much to know about Skyrim. Here's some things I know.

Winter Hold is built on top of the ruins of Saarthal, the first city the Atmorans built in the First Era. Saarthal was destroyed during the Night of Tears, which saw the Falmer (or just elves, depending on who you ask) sneak attack the Atmorans, killing all of them except Ysgramor and his two sons.

Whiterun is controlled by a self-proclaim priestess of Lorkhan (Shor)

The Labyrinthian was built by Shalidor to house the Glamoril, which in elven means "the Secret of Life"

Most of the Nord population does not live in the mountains, but rather in the valleys.

In Solitude (I think) there is the Imperial College of the Voice (or something like that) which is supposed to teach the ways of Thu'um. But it is really nothing more than a bard college.

Thanks for the infos..some of them are new and very useful...I'm only not sure if the Imperial College of the Voice isn't in Markarth Side, founded by Tiber Septim, but I could be wrong!

Thanks :icecream:

Quite, please make a new thread if it's really necessary. A simple search at the top of the forum should give you the answers you need, but if not then there are plenty of people willing to explain it to you. Thanks.

On topic, I would say that, like with most non-in-game provinces, there's really not too much lore out there. I know there have been several attempts to prove that Skyrim isn't all snow and mountains, so you might get some good stuff from those, but I'm afraid I can't find the link. I remember some website/blog about the Elder Scrolls having something similar, but I can't remember completely. Good luck, screenshots look great :goodjob:

Very well, strange traveller. I accept your quest. I shall hunt down this, this "lore", and I shall present you with it's severed head.

Which would make sense, considering living in those conditions year round is very difficult! But, if anyone could do it, it'd be the Nords and their Frost Resistance.

Ooh, classic American mistake there. Unless from the start on there has been some form of central planning people generally don't their houses on square grids or even right angles. You can actually see this in the cities in Oblivion, they're grown organically.

Now you can have a look at http://historic-cities.huji.ac.il/ or get Google maps and look at the city centres of some ancient cities. Rome, Jerusalem, Cairo. Not Paris, it's been rebuild.

I also think the cast iron fence is kinda out of place. Not because the Nord may or may not have cast iron but because it doesn't fit with who they are. You have to start from the ground up, get some people together, brain storm about how you view the Nords. Then from that idea, that concept you start building and writing. You do this all because your ultimate aim should to tell a story, and a story is not about a collection of facts, it's a mood, it's an atmosphere, it has feeling. You have to get this across in every aspect.
Check http://www.monkeytruth.net/ for a taste of atmosphere, it's why most folks love everything that smells of metaphysics.

If you don't believe me, go watch Avatar. Dragons with USB ports, Seriously.

Not to mention the treeline. I imagine the exceptionally tall Nords bonking their heads on the branches while trying to build some of those outer buildings, and there's no field of fire. An invading army could sneak up on and surround all four sides of the town undetected.

Yeah, and you'd want cleared space around the town, so if there is a forest fire, your buildings won't catch fire from the trees. Also, if a tree does fall down (death or damage), it won't split your house in half.

@ Proweler

The City on the Screens is Dunbarrow in Haafinheim Forest and not far from the Coast...the whole forest has the size of Solstheim. This iron gates are from an imperial cemetery outside the city, many imperials live there because of the large silver mine...but yes, you are right...the houses are little bit too organized.

@ Zurnan

There is a wall around the town, you can't see it from above because of the trees...only the main gate needs to be protected...and it IS protected by local guards and the Imperial Legion cause Cyrodiil has a great interest in the silver from the mine.

BTW, the forest is the best protection from invaders...I have my doubts if it is possible to sneak undetected if 12-18 hungry wolfs are around you, or an angry wild hog or black bear have fun to play this them...sometimes 2 or 3 sabertooth wanna have their meal :nono: it's always a threat to leave the walkways.

Even a hungry wolf isn't going to attack an army... well, ingame they would, but lets hope that's not what we're basing the question off of. Not to mention that even if they did they would be easily killed and the sound of a wolf isn't going to set off alarms with people that live in a forest. Not to mention that alot of the trees right on the edge of the town would likely have been cut down to provide firewood and/or the lumber to build with.

If you wish to advertise openings in your mod you'll have to do it in your mod's thread. I do understand why this may not be terribly effective for what you're trying to do - perhaps it would be good asking the Imperial Library folk if you can post a thread on their forum about this. Given that this thread has already had difficulty staying on topic I'm going to go ahead and lock it.

As for the OT conversation itself, having trees right by your walls/houses is not only a serious fire risk but as others have pointed out its also a security risk. Even if you do have semi-domesticated guard animals the forest provides excellent cover and an effective means of scaling the defenses. Even a moderately large group could potentially take out the guard animals and get right up to the walls (possible even over the walls) before the townsfolk knew they were there. Of course while this may not make real world sense Tamriel does benefit from something we don't have, magical wards and protections, if there are a group of spell casters in the town it wouldn't be unreasonable for them to have the arcane equivalent of a perimeter alarm. :)
