Internet Explorer 9 Beta

Post » Mon Aug 02, 2010 12:10 pm

M mom's computer is stuck with this internet explorer 9, it seems. I can't switch to Firefox or anything like that as my mom doesn't like them, but I can't take this beta (Is it still a beta?), anymore. The initial problems were greater, but then some were fixed, it seemed. Still, I can't watch videos from sites other than Youtube, I can't use anything but the 64-bit internet explorer (What happened to cause this; This isn't really much of a problem, but an inconvenience... and I'll explain why), I can't use the multiquote feature of these forums and, as a result of the change in format and being forced to use internet explorer, 64-bit version, Norton's method of alerting me to potentially dangerous sites (check mark near safe sites before I click on them, assurance of identity protection and security on sites, etc.) no longer seems to work. I don't know what's going on and I just want to revert to internet explorer 8, if possible. Is this possible? Also, is this still a beta? If that is the case, shouldn't it be possible to revert to a fully functioning version?

Why can't you switch to another browser? You don't need to make them the default browser, just use them your on and leave IE default for when your mom goes on.

As for rolling back to IE 8 I'd just download the executable and see if it will let you install it over IE9.

I didn't know I could do that. When my mom changed to internet explorer 9 on her account, it changed things for my account, as well. I assumed other browsers would do the same.

Well you should be able to use other browsers, but IE 64-bit isn't really updated. It lacks flash support so Youtube and many other website won't function properly.

IE 32-bit is located in C:\Program Files(x86)\Internet Explorer.

To uninstall IE9: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/how-do-i-install-or-uninstall-internet-explorer-9 , however IE8 64-bit is just as bad.

So, the 32-bit version of internet explorer 9 doesn't work with this computer, it seems, and whatever's going on is truly starting to annoy me as I can't access much... not even Minecraft. What are my best options from here?

Try a different browser. It's odd that IE9 wouldn't work with a Windows computer though, it might be worth trouble shooting that at some point as some programs [although less than in the past] do use IE for various things.

Different browsers:
http://www.opera.com/
http://www.google.com/chrome/
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/new/

As for which one you choose it's all personal preference.

Yes.

I'm currently trying out Firefox. It's nice, so far. It may be just me, but it seems faster than Internet Explorer and Minecraft is working again.

That's because it actually is faster than Internet Explorer, it's not just you. Although I'm not sure how much the difference is with IE9's introduction of http://www.businessinsider.com/internet-explorer-9-browser-2011-5. At any rate I'd recommend you try all the browsers I posted and then use whichever one you like the most.

I don't get the Internet Explorer hate, honestly. Firefox 4.0 was kind of a letdown to me and on my machine actually is more sluggish than IE, probably because it's so bogged down with plugin support. Either way, this isn't the 90s - so long as you have some basic anti-virus and advertisemant blocking programs, you ought to be pretty safe on the internet regardless of which browser you use.

I find Chrome to easily be the fastest of the browsers and it has a steadily growing collection of extensions, but it still has a love/hate relationship with Flash so it isn't exactly perfect. I don't use a lot of flashy addons, so to me browser speed and web standards-compliance is the main selling point. Plus, admittedly, I'm kind of a svcker for the oldschool Windows interface in IE and Firefox. :teehee:

I find Opera to be the fastest. I love it to bits, and will never switch back. Firefox 4.0 even looks a lot like Opera, but still doesn't match up for speed. The only advantage (for me) that Firefox has is all the myriad apps available. IE9 refuses to work on my 64-bit machine, and the 32-bit executable tells me it doesn't like my OS :(. The only thing I use Firefox for is for Yahoo! mail, because they tell me that Opera isn't supported (even though when I get past that screen it works.)

what is your mom smoking that she would use IE over pretty much any other browser, especially mozilla?
