It confuses me, why do the blades use Akaviri equipment?

http://www.imperial-library.info/akavir/index.shtml#influence

The Blades are secretive order of knights sworn to protect the Emperor. Their armor was based on Akaviri designs. The first Blades are likely to have been Akaviri captives in the service of Emperor Reman. The armor is very ornate and also quite heavy. Nevertheless it suits the order in its role to protect the Emperor. Furthermore, the Blades also emulate the Akaviri in their choice of weapons and banners.

We should also remember the first Fighters Guild was formed by a Tsaeci potentate who ruled Tamriel at the time. I'm sure the weapons and armor influenced the Blades.

What I think is interesting is that the blades armor actually closely resembles Roman lorica segmenta armor, which makes sense given Morrowinds depiction of them as Romanesque, but less so with Oblivion's generic medieval plate armor, and even less with the Japanese style katana. But I suppose a random mixing of cultures gives it a 'uniqueness.'

It's funny though..

When I think of Blades I see Knights in the biggest, most badass, ornate templar-esque armor you have ever seen.

Yeah but that's cliche' and therefore boring, and therefore wrong.

Besides, keep in mind that the Blades are a secretive and elite order. Walking around in shiny metal armor that's gonna attract a lot of attention isn't exactly their style. In fact ninety percent of the time they're in disguise as normal civilians, gathering intelligence on potential enemies of the Emperor.

Well yeah.

In my eyes it would still look awesome though.

I can see at least the Personal bodyguards of the emperor wear something like that.

Nothing wrong with samurai-esque armor though, but if they where aiming for that, it could have been so much better than what we have.

The Blades are each given a uniform, consisting of an enchanted cloak and dragonscale cuirass, once they're passed the Many Molts of the Serpent, in which every man and woman becomes a master of common armors within six months. Its not uncommon to see the Blades attired in whichever arms they prefer. Keep in mind, the most dangerous bodyguards are always the ones you never see.

As pointed out, their armor ain't samurai. Its more like a bastard child of the dragonscale gear from Morrowind and the lorica.

edit: amalgamation is too pretty

I know, I meant extremely ornate. :P

As in: entire story of the blades carved into the armor. (But that's probably even too fancy for the emperor)

Really? http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/oblivion/images/4/48/Blades_Armor.jpg http://www.martial-forums.com/forums/photopost/data/500/ArmorSamurai736_hi.jpg It is like samuri armour = made by a western smith in imitation, exept with added greaves and an open helmet.

The cuirass looks like Roman armor to me.

I know what you're trying to say when you use the word Romanesque, but it doesn't quite apply. There was a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanesque period of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanesque_art and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanesque_architecture during the middle ages, that dropped off a little during the renaissance. If you use that term, you'd be refering to the medieval period by accident. You could say Roman styled or http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Romanish instead.
