what we need to do is get writing that both men and women can relate to and get rid of the Gamer stereotype. then we will get more women playing games and more women making games.

i read an article in the paper yesterday that said: British Game studios would hire more women if more women would apply for the job. You cant hire someone if they don't apply.

That. Oh, and about the stuff above... A game with a female lead and a male sidekick could solve most of those issues. Like some graceful lass teaming up with a wild monkey god fighting robots after the green apocalypse. Now that would be a game!
Can't say male gamers I talked to were especially weirded out by good old Cate Archer, either.

Well I can't play Rockstar's games anymore because I can't in any way relate to the male characters, they're too generic, too much of the same all the time. Women can be as strong and stubborn, where they make lack in any physical strength aspects, they might make up for in other areas like maybe being more cunning, having a way with words and more.

A video game character doesn't just need to be all about the big guns and bulging muscles, they could also be the kind of character who has a strong intellect, an understanding of the world beyond killing whatever's in their way. Male leads tend to lack in those areas since they're more often than not just there to kill things, the rare chances of a male lead who's not like that is very rare.
The media as a whole needs to start thinking outside of the self made box of tired cliches and stereotypes, not every gamer is some 'basemant dwelling geek'. I game in my living room in the council flat I live in, others have their own houses and jobs, others are married with/or are expecting kids.

Stereotypes have no place in a diverse society.

The only thing is is once you start saying ok well show both male and female then race will be involved and it just starts to become a hassle so I understand why they just have a guy. It doesn't bother me. If I can pick a girl I will but if not then no skin off my nose.

And to make it clear I am not making it about race or complaining or anything that's just my thought on what may happen if we start showing both male and female players.

While I think the name of the game is probably one of the Worst names I have Ever seen given to a video game, "Wet" does feature a leading Female character as the star (with no male equivalent), and you have many male secondaries that you meet and can hang with in the game. Had they chosen a better name, I think the game would have been much better received. But in general, the video game starting a female role is already here - No One could accuse Lara Croft as some kind of softy, and hopefully the stereotypes will fall further in future games with leading female roles.

Sadly though (and I hate seeing this), all of the walls have not fallen. Here's to hoping the next 5 years the gaming industry matures at twice the rate they did in the last 10.

Since you can choose your gender there has to be a female version of models too, unless they have decided to use unisix models. Wich would be very unlikely and look really wierd too. Now then, i have truied to recreate these armors and female variants based on what i think they will look like. You can see some pics of my guesses over here:

Nice job, Ultima.

To be fair, I'd like to give the benefit of the doubt and possibly, the marketers may have already planned to do the reveal on the female armor...maybe on the G4 special on Monday? It's just a simple request...please provide some screen shots, and not only of the male armor. That's fair. After all, if the big war ever happens, after the fallout, women will be trying to survive in the Wastelands too. It's RPG and a growing part of the audience would like to be included and not excluded.

Props to the developers et al for making great RPGs that have a choice of a woman as lead. The best games have that choice. I'll keep watching for those photos. See you in the desert.

And since Kat Gunn won the WCG Ultimate Gamer 2010, it's a growing audience...she's showing that it's only growing...how about that armor? :)
