Skyrim's feel so far

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 5:59 pm

For me, so far it gives me the "Beowulf" feel, it's just that whenever I watch the trailer for Skyrim, I get reminded of the movie "Beowulf." Anybody else got a comparison?

I'm hoping it's Beowulf-ish, as in like the original saga. I really think it should play like a Nordic Saga, but Lord of the Rings was also very much like one of those so it could very much be both.

This is the land of the nords, and they have plenty of norse influence.

The music from the trailer made it feel very, for lack of a better word, big, like some big [censored]'s going to happen. Very Nordic feeling, I'd bet (It is Skyrim...) Not much else, the trailer was pretty short, didn't see any actual gameplay environments.

Yes, I'm mostly hoping it feels Skyrim-like. Like how Morrowind felt like it's own setting. Moving away from what felt like the more typical fantasy of Oblivion.

Doesn't get much more simple than this. Just like the Bloodmoon expansion pack, which had a very heavy Norse-influence (think the Skaal), TES:V also has a very Norse feel to it. The music obviously helps achieve this in a big way, and while I feel that comparison's to Lord of the Rings aren't completely accurate at this point, I can certainly see where people are coming from.

So far it doesn't feel like Lord of the Rings in the least. It's much more like Beowulf, with its Norse influences and runic carvings and the like. I really enjoy that feel, although I'm sure Bethesda has much more to it than that.

Bloodmoon 2 - bigger and better :celebration:

Oh, and 13th Warrior!!

'Lo, there do I see my father. 'Lo, there do I see my mother, and my sisters, and my brothers.
'Lo, there do I see the line of my people back to the beginning.
'Lo, they do call to me. They bid me take my place among them.
In the halls of Valhalla. Where the brave may live... forever.

Personally, I want it to be Beowulf-like. I want there to be that harshly epic feel with kings and magic swords and strange monsters attacking mead halls and fighting dragons.

The music and feel of the trailer does give me a general feel of the Mines of Moria in LOTR

The 13th warrior is SUCH a badass movie. Definitely in my top 20.

This, lol.

But in regards to the Beowulf feel, there is a place call High Hrothgar in Skyrim. Which, btw, is straight out of Beowulf. Well the name Hrothgar at least.

The dark atmosphere reminds me heavily of Macbeth. I'm hoping that the game's plot matches, with lots of political treachery and the supernatural.

I hope this Beowulf feel doesn't go away, most games don't dab into stuff like that, and I'm tired of the LotR feeling every fantasy game has.

I'm getting a snowy, rocky, cold, nordic vibe from what we've seen so far. Which is to say from the teaser. And it seems like an appropriate vibe.

I just really hope this game drips with atmosphere. They really need to nail it. When I walk into a dungeon, I want the oppressive darkness to be so tangible I could cut it up with a knife. When I walk into a mead hall from being out in the freezing nordic winds, I want the firelight and the camaraderie to be such a relief that I could fill up a mug with it and get drunk on it.

I wonder how Nordic it's going to be. There's a tendency in these things to conflate Nords with Scots.

The teaser trailer made me think of the game viking battle for asgard, that's probably just me thinking that though lol.

It doesn't feel like Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings, but it does feel like Tolkien's other works such as The Children of Hurin and parts from the Silmarillion. These were heavily influenced by the old English poem Beowulf ( which means war wolf in old English), and also the Germanic ring cycle Der Nibelungen Saga, which is a conflation of Teutonic and Scandinavian legends. Also let's throw in Robert E. Howard's Conan for good measure. :grad:

I watched the trailer 100 times probably. But honestly, it doesn't feel like anything, come on, we only saw au hge carved wall, not even "runes", and a stone dragon coming out of it. That could be in 50 other settings.

I just really hope they use the Nord culture right, I saw many games doing a huge fail using the existing stuff from lore. Heck, they even kinda ruined the point of Berserkers in Bloodmoon, making them all naked nutheads charging at you randomly in the forest.
