Any way to avoid booby trapped chests?

Post » Fri Sep 10, 2010 4:39 am

I've opened this chest in Memorial Cave but everytime I do so, I die because it is booby trapped. No amount of health potions or spells can heal me. It drains my health and my magic 100%. I'm not sure how to deal with this. Any advice?

Try putting a body on the chest and opening it in such a way the spell will hit the body instead of you.

Fortify Health potions? Though one trap (of Fran's) was so powerful it killed me even with 100pt Fortify Health potion, with Fran's there are keys for every trapped chest, though. Or come back at a higher level, I use the Map Marker overhaul that allows me to make notes of stuff like that.

If you don't mind cheating, tgm will take care of that :D

Edit: the above is cheating too, but less so ;)

OK, fine, it's an exploit, but someone had to say it right?

High agility will allow your character to dodge traps, and he can sometimes even detect/disarm/extract a powerful poison from them. The traps themselves are random, so that if you reload, you stand a chance that it will at least be a different type of damage ... perhaps one that your character might have better resistance against. I've come back to an insta-kill electrical trap with powerful potion in hand, only to get hit by poison. :swear: But some chests were meant for higher level characters (especially the fancy/ornate ones with very hard locks). Disabling OOO's lockpicking skill requirements allows them to attempt to pick the lock, but no protection against the trap is given--in short, just like with bandit strongholds, if the newbie character dies he probably shoulda known better.

Another option is a short duration Fortify Security spell. It will not only make it possible to open Very Hard locks but also that the trap is disabled and you get a poison potion instead.

"Short duration" as in 1 second. Same applies for Armorer. Cheap, extremely useful spells.

And when you do manage to survive, you'll find the contents to be all of:

1 Ayleid coin
1 Lockpick
10 Gold
1 Stone Mug

:P

(Some of them have static loot but the bulk are random based on level.)

Why would anyone avoid chests with boobies? :hubbahubba:

...Cos they're trapped... :bonk: :shakehead:

On a more high-brow (does that exist, meaning opposite of low-brow?) note, I never knew that putting a body over the chest would stop the spell from hitting you, I've got to try that in future...

If you get a poison from disarming a trap, does poison resistance do anything to avoid or lessen damage, or is it counted as magic damage? I'm talking about OOO traps here.

Or why not have probes for attempting to disarm traps like in Morrowind?

I think Supreme Magicka has detect trap and disarm trap spells? Or maybe they were included in OOO? I can't remember.

You can hold up an item with your grab key as you open the chest. If you're good you can block the spell (and hope it's not an area spell). This is pretty tricky to do though.

If you want to be even more super cheap, you could increase your activation distance and open the chest from far away, so you can hide behind something as you open the chest, or you can try to dodge the magic projectile that it shoots at you.
