Pitchable Tent/Survival

Post » Thu Sep 16, 2010 6:29 am

The pitchable tent Mod was one of my favorites in Morrowind, (and actually the first i ever DL'd). I was wondering if anyone else thinks this would be a good addition to the actual game. Unlike the Mod, I dont think you should be able to store stuff inside the tent. I think the Tent should include a bedroll and a campfire. The fire would keep some, but not all wildlife away from you while you sleep. Also with the addition of tasks such as cooking it would be a good way to make food out in the wilderness.

Also in Skyrim i think there should be a "survival" mode that doesnt exactly makes enemies harder, but forces you to do necessary things for survival. I think the more time you go without eating or drinking your fatigue should slowly go down. Eventually you would collapse, this would be bad for beginner players so first time you collapse you would be rescued by a passing survivalist who could teach you techniques. There would be many things that you would have to do such as boil water, cook your food, and sleep in a real bed everyonce in a while. I think that fatigue really needs to be overhauled. It shouldnt be you swinging power be more of your life power. I think features like this would make the wilderness of skyrim a whole lot more of a challenge, and in my eyes a whole lot more rewarding.

Please post your ideas about survival techniques and add some if you can think of any.

I'm all in for these ideas. The hardcoe-mode in FO:NV was a great asset, even if it wasn't challenging enough, imo. A lot of people don't care about it, though, so a hardcoe-mode in Skyrim should be optional (like it was in FO:NV).
I have not yet read anything about a survival-skill in Skyrim, so I guess it isn't in. But a tent? Heck! It should be in, nomatter what. It should be something you could purchase from every vendor - in a rough and wild world like Skyrims I would consider it mandatory equipment for a traveller or adventurer (like spears).

Yawn... I dont want to be forced to wait for water to boil over a fire and be forced to eat and drink or I would collapse. I want to be able to play the game without anything stupid like this interrupting me and slowing me down. I would ONLY accept this idea if it was a certain mode like hardcoe mode or something which is ONLY unlocked after at least one playthrough so nobody selects it then regrets it and restarts...

I think a portable shelter is a fantastic idea. There could be some issues with clipping and the like but those are minor. It'd be interesting if you could make your own encampments and outposts in the wilderness, then load them with a few settlers like a shopkeep and a blacksmith. Like Raven Rock but on a smaller and more dynamic scale. Of course, it would be unrealistic if you could just drop a tent and hide in it when you're being chased by wolves, so there could be an hour wait whenever you want to pick up or drop your tent.

How about like New Vegas where you can switch it on and off?

I think its a pretty good idea. It would give more incentive to go on long trips and explore the world instead of always using fast travel. I'd still probably use fast travel when I want to finish a quest or something, but the ability to rest without using up potions for healing and such would be a nice addition, hardcoe mode or not.

This. I would be happy with just a bedroll.
Or...what about going to a store and buying an 'Outdoorsman Kit' or something, and you could add to what you have like you bought a house in Oblivion. As long as you found a flat area, you could rest there.

Personally, I'm not going with any hardcoe first time (if there even is one) or even second time, but I would eventually do it just to change things up.
Because arrows are in scarce supply in this game, I think it would be cool if there were traps available. Enough to cripple animals (small pit and spike to step on) so you can do melee.
Sounds horrible, but its just a game, so I wouldn't be bothered (after seeing it the first time or so anyhow).

I can see not wanting to have to constantly cook all the time, but there is a solution to that - jerky or elven bread. However, that has little to do with tents.

I really want to go camping in the outback, and setup a tent near a river, or on top of a picturesque hill. This might have to be the first mod, if it isn't already in the game.

A portable tent was also made for Oblivion. So, it will probably be modded in Skyrim as well.

Then don't use it. It would only be an option.

I never said that it would be required, just an option to expand role playing.

I was thinking that Beth could designate camping zones . I wouldnt be too hard to do. Also if you could click on your tent and an option would appear (Set marker on nearest Campsite)

Yeah let's face it going out in the wilderness exploring on Oblivion just wasn't worth the hastle because you could heal by waiting an hour, you rarely discovered anything cool..it just wasn't very captivating and the lack of challenge made it no fun. A survival or hardcoe mode should most definitely be an option in Skrim.

I reckon it either look silly to see a tent suddenly appear or boring to watch a tent pitching animation everytime you want to sleep.

I would like to see the return of Tents in Nomad Camps, like the Ashlanders of Morrowind.
