How is the Justine expansion? I might buy it in regards to Portal 2.

You already have it.

That's interesting because in Europe it's €7,49. I guess the fact that no retail stores sell the game means that Steam has no reason to enforce its $1=€1 policy...

Or it's more based on the fact that those devs pay their buns in Euro. ^_^

It's free!

I've just looked at it, and the first minute looks like it has an awesome premise!

It's basically Portal (exept trough the messed up eyes of the Amnesia universe in the 1800's),

You (Apparently Shell) wake up in a strange locked dirty prison cell, a rope tied to a gramophone blocks the door. You turn the handle of the gramophone and a strange woman's voice comes out, taunts you and tells you she wants to experiment on things, and ask you to go in the next room.......

Woah.... I have only one thing to say:

Valve is awesome! :celebration:

However I'm probably about to die of terror in the next few minutes...... so wish me luck!

PS: Apparently Apparture science existed in the 1850's and is incorborated in Boston. how weird.... But not as weird as the fact that Amnesia is Canon with the Half-Life and Portal universe!

There is a growing list of Fan Made "custom story episodes" for this game listed here:

I want to buy it. At the moment I'm just watching Toby's walkthrough of it. He's not the most efficient gamer, but definitely the funniest.

I assume you play with headphones and solitary darkness?
Honestly I had to play it a few times before it stopped scaring me as much. I started to know what not to open to avoid triggering unnecessary scares and such. Have you encountered the Dorian Gray effect on Alexander's portrait? That made me crap my pants more than anything for some reason. If you're really freaked out by the monsters (though it's really just the uncertainty that is truly frightening), you may consider maxing out your health (and sanity if you wish) via notepad on certain files so you can take a good look at his servants. They're not very pretty no, but the more you look the less scary it gets. May be a gamebreaker to ruin some horror though. It's just what I did after a few playthroughs out of curiosity. Turns out the "godmode" doesn't last - after a couple room changes it went back to normal.. which of course scared the crap out of me.

Me: Ha, you can't hurt me you big ugly thing!
Longface: Gruuuuh, *SWIPE*
Me: Oh [censored]!

Another silly game breaker is in the choir.. if you run lengthwise across the gap when a brute is after you, and then quickly jump onto the elevated part of a nearby bridge, he'll run after you right into the chasm below. Not really recommended for an actual playthrough, just for a laugh. Why? The stupid scary-ass music when a monster is after you keeps playing. If you run into another monster you might not notice it's a different one. One slash from brute = death. And the choir is already screwed up and hard to see in as it is.

Jumping onto grunt's heads is also fun. They swipe at you anyway but can't hit, hohooh.

So I just fired up Justine for the first time. It's very nice! You go through a series of puzzles, much like the original game, but with a twist. If you do things right you get to save the lives of several people. If you make a mistake, they die horribly. It's all set up by some sick psychiatrist woman who wants to see how your mind works. Also there is no save/reload feature for Justine, so if you do something wrong you can't reload, and if you die then the game exits and you have to start all over. Very tense.

Wouldn't call her a psychiatrist, that's more of her father. But yes she's crazy and
Spoiler
was testing herself. The three monsters you encounter are her three suitors. In the first main room (the prison), if you build a box ladder up to a platform on your upper left upon entering, you'll find a bonus wax cylinder for a phonograph later on. This is basically a recording of her drugging and blinding her second suitor Basil, who you find in the storage-esque room past the library. That would explain how the monsters/suitors cannot see you. I assume they look so friggin' creepy because she's a total nutjob, but she also put those metal contraptions on them as well to prevent escape for her test. If you get closely enough to the monsters, you can hear the suitors individual voices talking to you. First is Alois in the cell room, saying things like "Why is this happening? Justine, my love, are you there?" Basil is rather angry the whole time "I will find you" and has a grumbly voice that really is unsettling. The last suitor, the musician, I've never been able to hear since you have to book it like hell to get away from him. You can find their individual cells in the cellblock near the beginning. Alois's is the one with the blood and scratches spelling "Forgive Me" (Justine had him cut himself for kicks, and he was very much in love with her and had tendencies as it was), the Musician's (Vagny or something similar) is obviously the one with the violin and sheet music, and Basil's is an empty cell on the same side. The opposite side of the block is where the three other prisoners are/have been (the ones you can save). The one with the holy bible on the bed is the priest's that you can save or kill in the library, the .. well okay the other guy I can't remember is already in his cell, covered and still alive under a spike mechanism, and the policeman's cell is the remainder. He was hired by Alois's father who was worried about his son's pursuit of her because he knew she was nuts, and he wished for an investigator to gather some charges on her to have her locked up. Looks like that didn't turn out well for him.

Other things I gather .. Justine killed her father when she was 11, and her father had performed psychological tests on her (think the slides in the library) but had at the same time molested her. The tape talking about Vagny (again, whatever his name is.. the musician) explains Justine being amused by his stumbling at his performance, and she along with the other two suitors carry him off. I assume this is where her blinding and trapping of the suitors began.

There are some things I still don't understand, though. Such as the significance of her father's star and why her father's gravestone says "Peter Pan," and exactly what the letter Justine has Clarice send at the ending is supposed to mean.

I love it. Do what they recommend (turn out the lights, put on the headphones, etc) and the game really svcks you in. I had to close the door to my home office because the wife kept coming in and scaring me whilst playing it.

After about 2 1/2 hours into it I've decided that this game was a waste of my time and money. I heard a lot of good things things about it and I was really looking forward to playing the game, but it was definitely not made for me.

I like the set design and the dark atmosphere that is found in the game, but I wouldn't describe it as Scary, at most it's mildly spooky. I really like the controls, the one negative I heard about the game was "it takes forever to figure out how to open a door". I found the control scheme to be quite natural and intuitive. I'm not a big fan of the No HUD interface. I understand the whole Immersion concept, but to me it's even more immersion breaking to have to pause the game and click on a picture of a heart or brain. Also I find the sanity visuals distracting at best and nauseating at worst. This leads me to my biggest issue with the game, the character of Daniel is completely opposite of my personality. I like the dark, I'm very comfortable in the dark, but the game penalizes me for being in the dark. I like that when you go from light to dark that it becomes impossible to see until your eyes adjust, the way they show it in the game is awesome, but this only encourages me to stay away from the lights. Finally when I saw my first monster my initial thought was "Come get some you reject from a Tool video!" But alas this Daniel has no offensive capabilities. I love games like Thief and Splinter Cell that make extensive use of sneaking and hiding, but those games also let me go on the offensive when the need arises. Amnesia only gives me the choice of Running or Hiding from all threats, which is not in my nature. I'm not saying that the game needs be more like Call of Duty or that there should be a secret area that has a jetpack with twin mini-guns, but if I can use a chair to break through a brick wall then surely I should be able to hurl things at the Gatherers to keep them at bay.

In the end I applaud the game as a break from the latest clone of every FPS ever made. I really hope they are successful and can grow their games free from the universal dumb-down plaguing some game companies.

*snippy*

Well, how far are you in 2 1/2 hours? The very beginning of the game didn't "scare" me that much as it did just have me on edge with the atmosphere.

Speaking of, I gotta get back to finishing it sometime. The last time I played, I was in the living room with surround sound on our 48" tv and I had my roommate and girlfriend watching.

Spoiler
We all freaked during the water monster part and I kept waking up my girlfriend by jumping during the prison.

Well it was a while ago, but the last part I remember was groping around in an underground cavern area either either looking for or just found a crowbar. I was also out of flint because I used it all up trying to light up a room to regain my sanity in. If I were to go back to it I would most likely have to start a new game as I don't remember exactly what I was supposed to be doing.

I think that if the dark was darker and the torches brighter and they ditched the forced scotophobia I would be able to really get into it, but for now I just get bored and frustrated.

I think you're playing it wrong. You only need to light up one torch and stand next to it, no need to light up a whole room.

By the end of the game I had so much extra flint and oil, and I lit more torches than necessary but not an excessive amount.

Is Amnesia that game with extremely realistic sword fights?

Nah, it's a psychological-horror game where you solve puzzles and run away from enemies.

...Try turning the gamma settings down? Smart-mouthed answer is a little smart-mouthed there, but really, you wouldn't believe the difference that can make. As for Daniel being afraid of the dark: if I were in his shoes, I'd be afraid of what was lurking in the shadows, too. :P (Actually, if I were in Daniel's shoes, I'd probably be in the first cupboard you find in the game, curled up in a ball and svcking my thumb.)

Yes. If by "realistic sword fights" you mean "realistic hiding-in-cupboards-from-the-Lovecraftian-hellspawn action!"
