Fraps ;)

edit - to record, but then you probably need a video editor or something to edit clips and stuff together.

I'm only familiar with FRAPS as well.

Are there any freeware alternatives to FRAPS that allow you to record 1080p video?

FRAPS is what most people use for game recording. Just hope you have a very large HD. Uncompressed video is huge.

I've only used FRAPS, but it looks like the latest version of http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm now has video capture and is free, might be worth a try.

For video you have to pay I think, but it can output pictures in .bmp format so you could try mashing the print screen button or whatever FRAPS uses repeatedly and try stringing those together? :P

While playing? I think a third arm will cost more than Fraps.

*facepalm* forgot about the fact you'd have to play the game too :P. Maybe ask a friend? :P

Last time I used it [years ago] you could record video with fraps in the free version. However, it would put a watermark at the top [which can be cropped out] and would only record 30 second files [which can be spliced together].

I just download MSI Afterburner.

I got a few questions about some things.

1) What video compression should i use? There's uncompressed, RTV1 compression and MJPG compression.

2) What frame size whould i use? There's Full frame, 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4.

1. If you have the HDD space for it I don't see a reason not to used uncompressed. If you want to conserve HDD space [I'm assuming at the cost of while-recording CPU performance] just try either of those formats and see which one your computer does the best with.

2. I assume this would be 1/2, 1/3,..etc size of your in game resolution? That depends on what quality you want and how much HDD space you have. The closer to 1 you choose the better, in terms of quality, assuming I'm reading it right.

1. Uncompressed, then encode it in h264 with another program like http://handbrake.fr/. (to save HDD space and so it fits on YouTube)

2. Full, if you want the whole resolution.

K. I just did some test videos and the last video looked great.
I'll do it uncompressed this time and put it though that thing you linked.

I've got it set to 100% quality, frame size is full and set frame rate to 60.

It's not recording sound, it did say it would do sound though.

I need some help if anyone can offer it.

If you look at the video in my sig its got black edges down the sides.

Anyone know how to get rid of them, i read that if you change it to 16:9 it should fill it up but its not working.

If I were to start recording uncompressed video at my native resolution of 1920x1080, for about 10 minutes, how much space do you guys think that would take up?

Not that I plan to at the moment, but I am curious if I would need to worry about space any time soon. I say "soon" because I have a 1.5TB HDD, but I like to save space.

Also, does anybody know anything about getting HD video and audio from consoles?

I record compressed at 1920x1080 and I get about 7-8 minutes at 4GB. Uncompressed is about a minute and a half at 4GB so 10 minutes uncompressed (with FRAPS) would be about 25GB, give or take.

Well damn. That's a lot more then I expected. Now I know why HD movies need Blu Ray so much.
