Will there be a 'Survival' aspect to the game?

Post » Wed Oct 13, 2010 5:52 am

One of the things I really loved about Fallout 3 was that whenever I was just sandboxing it, or I guess you could even call it Roleplaying, it was fun and challenging because there was a bit of a survival aspect to it you know? I played on the highest difficulty and I would play the game as if I actually had to survive like a human being (eat food every day, find a place to sleep, and ofcourse SURVIVE all the dangers of the wastes) but I've been watching the Developer Diaries and it seems like everywhere you go theres going to be some settlement nearby, effectively taking out this survival aspect

If you enable hardcoe mode, then certain challenging aspects will be added to the game, like hunger, thirst, tiredness, ammo weight, etc. So yes, this game will have a much greater survival aspect to it than Fallout 3 did.

well that solves that problem, but I'm still wondering about the settlements. I liked the capital wasteland because I could walk around and explore for quite some time without running into any friendly NPCs, while the vid diaries make it seem like they're impossible to get away from

That's definitely not the case. The reason why the there's such a vast amount of NPCs in the diaries is because they mostly played in New Vegas. Once you leave the confines of Vegas, the real challenge of survival kicks in. So you've got nothing to worry about.

Ive been perusing the trailers and dev. commentaries, and from what I can tell, its still quite a bit of wasteland, you are just seeing the settlements because thats what looks exciting in a trailer. I mean, who wants to look at sand for 3-4 minutes of trailer? (minus the people who do it for hours in game. like me. :P)

Also, if memory serves, one of the trailers had a screen cap with the map in it. It looks pretty massive, so I am pretty certain that the wasteland can still be explored at your leisure, with settlements being relatively small and out of the way. (Besides Vegas of course.) Finnally, that question was asked in one of the E3 Demos, and the dev guy laughed and said that the wasteland was just as big, and could still be explored by the players.

TL;DR

Yes, you can still roam about plinking zombies and scrounging bottlecaps. There is an achievement for finding 150 locations if that helps any.

He's most likely referring to ghouls with a more widely known label.

Feral Ghoul = Zombie

The Feral ghouls brains have been screwed with just like a zombie has no real brain, that is why some call them zombies.

I know, I was just explaining to Gabriel what Wraithwatch was referring to when he said; "Zombies".

Considering the whole game is based on survival I think you're in luck here.
