Lore Help

Hey guys, I need some help :)

I have recently started reading more about The Elder Scrolls series and I'm more interested in the lore, but I'm so confused, I allways tough it was just humans, elves and orcs type of fantasy, but it appears to be much more! I hear terms Lorkhan and Nirn and Mungus and I get so confused! I would really really really appriciate if someone could explain me or give me some links to explain how the TES world started
I know what the Aedra and Deadra are, but who created them? What's the difference between them? I heared in-game that Tamriel is also an Oblivion Plane, is that true? I know all of the basic stuff, like they names of the princes and who belongs to which province, but I'm really intrigued to find out how it all started.

So in short, I would like for someone to give me links and explain who created who, and how and where it all started.

Thanks in advance :)

The http://www.imperial-library.info/mwbooks/monomyth.shtml is probably the best place to start. Once TIL comes back up (monday, hopefully) you'll be able to perform searches and stuff. Until then, read and re-read that document. anolyze how each story is the same and how it is different. The http://www.imperial-library.info/mwbooks/anuad.shtml is yet another version of the creation myth, and goes right alongside the Monomyth. If I were you, I wouldn't touch the question of Tamriel being a Daedric realm with a 10 foot pole until you understand the basics of those two links.

The first thing to remember is that anything you read comes from an in-universe character, and they can always be wrong.

Lorkhan is an old god. He convined the other gods to create Mundus, and was destroyed for it. The moons are his body, and his heart is found in Morrowind.

I think Mundus is the solar system that Nirn is in. (unless there's something called Mungus, and that's not a typo?)

Nirn is the planet we play on.

The Aedra and Daedra are gods. The Aedra are those who helped in the construction of Mundus, and are worshipped by the Imperials (The Nine Divines). The Daedra are the ones who didn't. They include the likes of Azura, Hircine and Sheogorath. They're often hated, and not many worship them. (Dunmer are the biggest Daedra worshippers, I believe)

Tamriel isn't the daedric plane, it's the continent that the series take place on. It includes Morrowind, Black Marsh, Elsweyr, Valenwood, High Rock, Hammerfell, Summerset Isles, Skyrim and Cyrodiil. There are other continents, such as Akavir around, but usually, there isn't much lore about them, and the lore that exists isn't always 100% reliable.

Nirn is a daedric plane. According to a lot of people. Mankar Cameron believes it's Lorkhan's lost realm, It's speculated that it's Mehrunes Dagon's realm, hence his attacking of it, and some even think it's the realm of the races of Nirn.

I'm not sure about the creation of the Aedra and Daedra, as it's before aything even existed.

also, Orcs are also elves. Orcs where created when http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Malacath was created.

My lore may be a tad wrong here and there, but that's the answers to most of your questions. You should look around UESP. I don't get why there's so much fuss about the loss of the Imperial Library.

Oh, and as Rhoark said, in game lore can be wrong.

If you're using UESP to look up books, yea, you can. If you're looking at the lore articles themselves, don't. They can be edited by anyone, and there is no guarantee that they don't contain information that is slightly wrong or completely made up. I've encountered both in the past. When it comes to books, I just don't like their search and organization system.

As for why books are better than summaries in general, its about how knowledge is passed on. A book is a primary source and forces you to synthesize information. Critical thinking in turn gives you a better understanding (for instance, reading the monomyth gives you a much deeper understanding of what Lorkhan is and how Mundus was made than simply saying "he convinced the other gods to make Mundus"). The sort of multifaceted learning gained from books in turn helps with other parts of lore - for instance, the OP should be able to figure out why Nirn is or is not a Daedric realm. The OP also won't need to ask the question of the differences between Shor and Lorkhan and learn the fundamental difference between elves and man (as opposed to pointy ears).
