Unofficial Game Development Thread

I suffer from a horrible case of programmer fatigue. I generally get a great idea for a game, spend two weeks working on it non-stop, then get tired and forget about the whole thing. It gets me some interesting tech demos but so far I've only released http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Xeno-Arena/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d802585501e7, which still only felt half finished. If you want to see some tech demos there's a few on http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=Lemunde.

Anyone know of any good places to get textures? CGtextures doesn't have what I'm looking for (but is very good), and I'm no digital artist. Apparently you can design them in 3D then render into a texture, but again, I can't model.

ugh the Hammer editor is so much [censored] <_<

I'm starting to think that the CryEngine tools are the only usable modding tools available these days

I get the same way just with regular applications. I really do like how that Fun with Gravity game looks. Would love to see the source for it. I've attempted at making my own program similar to that. Never could figure out how though. :P

I've started to work on a Twin Peaks-esque text adventure using the Inform 7, er, engine, I guess you could call it. Its pretty easy to use and the game isn't going to be very complicated, but you've got to start somewhere, right? I'm thinking of starting the story with a text adventure, then possibly making an adventure game sequel in the style of Monkey Island and the old Lucasarts games. I'm not sure where I'll go after that.

Yeah, I had to learn some new math for that one. But the concept isn't all that complicated. It basically uses the same code that applies thrust to apply gravitational force. The only tricky part is figuring out how much force to apply, which I had to look up the equation for. Basically gravity = g(m1 + m2) / distance^2, where g is a constant base value and m1 and m2 are the masses of two objects.

In fact if you go back and watch the first video you may notice the gravity is a bit off. That's because in my early tests I didn't square the distance. Gravity is supposed to increase in an exponential manner the closer you get to a massive object. I think it's a common misconception about gravity that it drops off in a linear fashion as distance increases. Or at least that's how we visualize it.

Bumping because I've finally managed to port textures and models from BioShock into Source. Eventually going to make an RP map, but at the moment I'm just playing around, https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_8wyYJ8d4Z-A/Tcz_y0mhizI/AAAAAAAAAGc/K9qA8_GHF_g/s800/2011-05-13_00004.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_8wyYJ8d4Z-A/Tcz_yoMCWLI/AAAAAAAAAGU/wXXydaThCJg/s800/2011-05-13_00002.jpg I'd say there were more pictures on the blog linked in my sig but blogger is down <_<

Paperwork and pitches are done! My project is finally confirmed by our company lead!

Last few weeks of pre-production, and then we have 7 month cycle of developing. A lot of planning to do :)

I got thick GDD (Game Design Document) written, but most likely a lot of things are going to change after
we got our first playable version of the game. I just fear that lack of 3D artists will slow things down. Currently my
team consists 2 programmers, 2 artists and 2 designers.

50mb file size limit, all file types allowed, doesn't resize or change the image at all. 100% image quality.

I use it to upload 3840 x 2160 Minecraft renders (png files) :P

So, I've got an idea for a 2D platformer-adventure game, and I've always wanted to start programming and make a game. What languages should I look at if I'm going to release it on the PC and possibly Xbox Live?

Any sort of, programs I can use that does alot for me, like RPG Maker? Just keeping my options open.

I'd say that XNA would be the bestbest choice, but it doesn't have all the simple RPG Maker type interface. I believe there may be other programs built for XNA that might offer a more approachable interface.

I've started to attempt using XNA and I'm doing the little 'Shooter' tutorial thing. My problem is that even after I download the version of the first step that they put up, I still get an error when trying to run it. Its says that it cannot locate the .exe, and I should build the project and try again. I don't know what's going on! Help! :bonk:

I'd say go with XNA if you also want your game on the 360. Otherwise I'd recommend http://code.google.com/p/angel-engine/. Made by our very own SJML, and his team. :)
XNA uses C# whereas Angel uses C++, so you should take that into account also.

Can you post the exact error message?

I'd hate to double post but I feel this is too important not to bump this thread for.

You can get Autdodesk's 3ds Max - and any other software they've made, like Maya! - for free if you're a student ( high school or college ). All you need to do is sign up for their Education Community. Here's their http://usa.autodesk.com/.
