Star Wars: The Old Republic

Post » Sun Oct 31, 2010 4:37 pm

Hey everyone, I searched Star Wars: The Old Republic, and SWTOR, and got nothing about the game back, so I'm assuming we don't have one, if we do, I apologize (and request a link :P).

So, who else is getting the game? If you are, what class are you planning to play?

Also, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e75_UyKQyyA for anyone who hasn't seen it.

Personally, that video is the whole reason I'm planning on playing a Vanguard, now. No more Bounty Hunter for me! :3

I'm going to chime in with the classic "It's not KotOR III and I'm ticked off" comment because it truly does apply to me.

Nope. And still no beta invitation in my inbox yet.

I'm slightly in the same boat with "It's not SWG 2 and I'm ticked off". It looks okay...besides their art style, which I find atrocious. This is either shaping up to finally be the "WoW killer" (not likely, seems like they've "borrowed" too much from it), or a very, very, expensive failure.

Admittedly, the art style looks gorgeous when it comes to the environment art.

I played the beta for about a month or so, ended on the 17th of this month, and I was left with mixed feelings. If you're expecting something even remotely similar to Star Wars Galaxies, this probably isn't gonna be your game. The similarities begin and end with the Star Wars name. World of Warcraft fans may end up liking it, as that's what my mind kept going to every time I played TOR. I probably wouldn't call it a WoW clone, but it has more in common with Blizzard's giant than I'd like.

However, the way the stories play out is nice. Really reminded me of Knights of the Old Republic and the voice acting wasn't bad at all. If nothing else I can picture myself getting a subscription to play through a few classes' stories.

I expect some things to change between now and release though. Hopefully it comes into its own, because right now "Star Wars" is the biggest selling point for me, and that's probably not a smart reason to pick up an MMO.

Yeah, I don't mind the environments too much, those look pretty normal. But god knows why they decided to go for that weird Chibi-esque character design from the animated show. It just looks so weird and out of place.

Why is it that a lot of people I know are getting into the beta yet I'm not?

I've got a killer gaming rig too...

Interesting thing is that the game has actually been in beta for almost a year now, yet we've had hardly any news whatsoever except for the progression videos etc. Interesting... I think that BioWare might be a bit insecure about the game.

Not to mention the fact that I personally have heard nothing about beta footage and previews from users... It's almost like they don't want any unauthorized news out about it.

I hope it fails. The series has no business being an MMO and Bioware should be ashamed for trying to make it one.

I feel that way myself, altho maybe not quite as strong as some. But I'd much rather have a single-player KOTOR3 than yet another MMO...I'm not the social player type. ;)

It says on the invite not to talk about it, and all discussion happens on a hidden forum on TOR's site, but I am surprised more people aren't talking about it openly. I suppose you'd lose your account if they found out but even that seems unlikely.

This about sums up how I feel about it.

EDIT: When I clicked on the link from above, the Skyrim trailer was the advertisemant. That's kinda funny.

I might give it a try, I don't do MMO's often. Honestly the only one I have ever played is LOTRO before it became free to play. It was fun, but the long term appeal wasn't there. Let's see if TOR can do that. Then again I also have a bunch of players in two different the old republic settings sure to be way more fun than any MMO so I'm not sure if I want to play it. I'm referring to the table top game.

Same. I wish it was KOTOR III :sadvaultboy: Wouldn't mind Battlefront 3 either though.

On topic though the game looks great but I'm not really into MMOs...if it's free though :P I'll definitely get it :)

I'm looking foward to it.

In fact -- myself, along with a couple of friends, are going to form an RP guild. I'm going to create a female, snarky, smuggler named Canna Madoon. Still working on the backstory and all that jazz. . .

They still have to prove that it's more than just WoW with Star Wars surroundings and a little more voice-over. Typical RP stagnancy and impact-filled RP don't really mix, so that's another concern.
