Cuisine in TES?

Post » Wed Nov 03, 2010 8:53 pm

In TES world, I heard very little about certain topics. Cuisine is one of them. For example, I have heard that in Morrowind they eat horse meat. But that's only it, I never heard of (E.G.) a typical dish of Skyrim or Cyrodill...

By the way, I remembered something: In Morrowind, there are so many exotic ingredients, such as Ampoule Pod, Comberry, Kagouti Hide, Luminous Russula, and even things that are not food, like diamants, ebony, etc. However, Oblivion has much more "normal" ingredients such as corn, beef, garlic, lettuce, onions, pears, potatoes, ham, etc... Is it the same reason that in Morrowind there are many exotic creatures in Morrowind but there are more "normal" creatures in Oblivion?

The Infernal City was written with you in mind, good sir. A solid half of the book is focused on cooking.

In all seriousness, there are several cook books around, you could check them for ideas about what people eat. Local dishes are also mentioned in various fiction stories.

I believe it's written somewhere (at least in a semi-official RP thread) that Argonians prefer their food raw, and for that matter, alive. In fact, I believe the same source mentions that Argonians find it odd that the other races eat "corpses", which they consider pretty disgusting.

Well, they won't eat or harm plant life from Valenwood, which is why they import wood from other providences.

Also, while not lore, there is a nice mod for MW which allows one to cook, and there is book that has some recipes (the one you steal in the TG quest)

I suggest reading http://www.imperial-library.info/content/oblivion-red-kitchen-reader as a start.

And there's lots of references to various foods in TES, even http://www.imperial-library.info/content/oblivion-draconis-gift-list.

Don't forget Sweetrolls. There's a very famous baker of sweetrolls in Cyrodiil (I forget which town), they talk about him in the rumors iirc. Morrowind is a rather unusual province, stranger perhaps than the other provinces? Perhaps only Black Marsh could compete with or even surpass Morrowind for strange fauna and flora. Because I think Cyrodiilian cuisine would probably have similarities to High Rock and Hammerfell cuisine in terms of "normal" foods.

The only dish I've ever seen in Oblivion is shepards pie.

It turns out that Annaig is an old Breton word for Julia Child.

I'm guessing that crab meat is a popular ingredient.

I'm assuming the people of Cyrodiil have a medieval European diet. From actual ingame statements there is some potato bread(not sure on how widespread this is), Shepherd's Pie, and roast svckling pig(according to an insulting comment about the Count of Cheydhinal).

As for Skyrim, this is all I know:

"I'm Snar the Cook. We've got genuine Skyrim cuisine... fresh, simple, big helpings... just like Mom used to make."

Add alchohol to that.

I just want to know where all those Kwama eggs are in Oblivion... isn't that one of Morrowind's primary exports?
You'd think that there would be some for sale somewhere.

Indeed, the Kwama eggs, cuttle, and rat flesh seem to get mentioned.

There is that one muffin....

Then there are the Sixth House shrines....(brrrrr, if you have the Animated Morrowind Mod....brrrrrr).

Pity they never mentioned the Kollops as a food, because they are not only plentiful, but also verrrrry profitable.

My friendly Orc friends at least let you know that your bones are appreciated. ; )

Thank goodness for mods that add fruit, like apples. But I learned the hard way you can't leave apple markers(visual reminders) in Oblivion. Not when the NPC's can walk over, pick it up, and munch on it while walking away. Awesome.

Let's not forget the favored cuisine of the Sixth House; Corprusmeat.

Arena, Daggerfall and Morrowind's class generator had that one questions about the sweetrolls they could be wide spread...

And I do believe in Elswyer they have a muffin/cake they present to company sprinkled with moon-sugar.

After the Red Year, though, I imagine kwama eggs are extremely rare; maybe not extinct, but probably so rare that only the nobility can obtain them. Maybe not even then. The unique wildlife of Morrowind has been decimated, with many species probably wiped out forever. Personally, I hope the netches still exist.
