Rougelike Mode

Post » Fri Nov 05, 2010 11:22 am

I think a great way to introduce multiplayer to future TES games (stick with me punk), is introducing a rougelike mode of play.

If you don't know what a Rougelike is:
- RPG
- Randomized dungeon floors, loot, and monsters with increasing difficulty.
- Depending on the choice of the player, you can have a set number of floors or infinite (infinite would probably end up being hardcoe mode).
- NPC owned shops to sell loot and buy supplies, enchanting equipment, some mindless kill quests and slap a few wenches for that next challenging set of floors.
- Pretty much the RPG that keeps on giving.

This way, the player can play with friends, keep a game running and not necessarily mess up their single player experience everyone is so worried about. And it would still be a pretty solid single player mode to dabble in when you want to just smash, stab, and blast enemies all over the ground. No you're not going to have too many unique things going on, because it would be a small rougelike expansion. But it would still be some pretty good mindless fun, that would definitely keep people playing the game longer.

No. Rather make it an actual role-playing game with player interaction in a well designed, immersive world. You know, the thing role playing games were originally meant to be about. I'd rather have no combat at all than only combat.

Roguelike style does not fit TES.
With that said, development resources are better spent elsewhere... like developing new gameplay features or improving the current ones.

To be perfectly honest, Rogue was one of first CRPG games.
I am not fond of it either but a fact is a fact.

Oh, and something else:
Biased poll is biased!

Diablo 3'll have "roguelike" covered for the next while, so..... Nah. :)

(And yeah - silly poll options are silly.)

Edit: yeesh, and I didn't even notice the multiplayer bit trying to slip in there at the end, because to me "roguelike" = "single player".

Hah, and also misread the title as "Roguelike MOD", not mode. I was like "well, if someone wants to make a mod for it, why not?". But official, dev time wasted on it? Aw, heck no!

Let's keep all multiplayer/co-op in one discussion thread please.
