What mods should a new player get that came from the 360?

Post » Tue Nov 09, 2010 8:25 pm

I have only played Oblivion on the 360 so now Im going to play Oblivion like it is meant to be. So my question is, what mods should I try?

Here is what Im interested in:

Graphics Mod( The best graphics mods for Oblivion. Revamps almost everything in game, especially NPCs)
NPC Mod( What I mean is a mod that makes Oblivion even more dynamic then it already is in Vanila, by NPCs living their life and having daily routines or something along those lines)
Realism and Immersion

And our question is what type of computer do you have has that will make a difference in what kinds of mod you can and cannot use. Espically graphics related.

My old PC couldnt even play Oblivion on everything low and I was just saying that I can play the game now.... just recommend mods. I didnt make this thread to talk about PCs.

You misunderstand him. "The best" graphics mods will bring the sort of PC that can run Crysis maxxed out to its knees - so to properly reccomend that sort of thing, we need to know what sort of PC you have.

As some one who played Oblivion first on the Xbox and put over a hundred hours into it before upgrading to the PC version, my recommendation for the absolutely most essential mods for a PC installation would be to grab all the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Tes4Mod:Unofficial_Oblivion_Patch and Streamline (sorry, can't find a link). The unnoficial patches fix hundreds of game-breaking bugs that nearly ruined the game for me on the Xbox, and Streamline helps prevent save files from being corrupted by keeping your saves from getting too bloated, or something. I'm not entirely sure how it works, but it does. These mods vastly improved the game experience for me - it's so nice not to have to constantly check walkthroughs to make sure I don't accidentally trigger some terrible bug or glitch and be forced to keep dozens of save files in case they get corrupted.

My second biggest suggestion is to get a leveling overhaul mod, because I hate, hate, hate the vanilla oblivion leveling system. It's so freakin' clumsy and counterintuitive. If you make your favorite skills all major skills as common sense would dictate, you'll level up like mad, but they'll be weak level ups, the monsters will outgrow you and you'll get your butt handed to you or have to turn down the difficulty. To actually become strong, you have to constantly take breaks from questing to increase your minor skills in stupidly artificial ways (jump in place under a low bridge, let things beat you up, cast a weak spell over and over again, etc) between each level up to maximize your attribute bonuses. Or just never sleep, and eventually you'll start crushing all your pitiful level 1 opponents with your ridiculously overpowered skills and spells.

Does that make any sense? GOD ITS SO STUPID. I actually spent a dozen hours on the xbox leveling up to 40 with maximized level ups just I could quest uninterrupted and not have to track all my minor skills on a notepad or adjust the difficulty (I'm stubborn like that).

Also you should get http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5701, so you don't have to hold off on some quests until you're a certain level just so you can get the best version of the reward. You have no idea how annoyed I was when I found out the estucheon of Chorrol was the best shield in the game if you get it at level 25+, but I had gotten it when I was level 5, svcks to be me. This mod will prevent that frustration.

You might want to look up Wyre Bash too. It's not that important if you're only using a few mods like I do, but it has some really useful tweaks and features for gameplay and immersion (I particularly like the Rational Names and Guard Names tweaks). It's a pretty technical program though, not for amateur modders. Tooks me a few weeks to really get the hang of it.

Sorry for the rant, but these few mods make the PC version of the game so much better than the xbox version without drastically change the basic experience, it's hard to believe. I don't think I could ever go back to the xbox version of Oblivion now.

Please take note that TES Nexus is currently blacklisted by Google as an attack site. The site is clean so it will not harm your computer to visit it (we're just waiting for Google to stop dinkin' around and remove the site from the list), but because of the hassle, I will not be posting any links.

Texture Replacer-
QTP3 Redimized (already suggested)

Gameplay Rebalancing-
Option 1: Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul (completely changes how the game handles level scaling, and numerous other features)
Option 2: Fancesco's Leveled Creatures-Items mod ("fixes" Oblivions original level scaling to be more sane, and adds new weapons and creatures)
along with those, get:
Martigen's Monster Mod (diversifies creatures and hostile NPCs) it is compatible with those two mods right out of the box.

Cities:
Option 1: Open Cities (places cities in the normal worldspace, like in Morrowind)
Option 2: Better Cities (Overhauls cities, adding tons of new things to see)

Open Better Cities is available, but unless you want your PC to explode, I'd advise against it.

Landscapes:
The Unique Landscapes Project (Diversifies Cyrodiil's endless light forest scenery)

Combat:
Deadly Reflex (Lots of new combat moves and options)
Duke Patrick's Combat Archery (Heavily realistic archery)

Magic:
Supreme Magicka (rebalances and expands magic, making it viable to be a pure mage)

Or, if you want both of those options, get FCOM.

I didn't recommend FCOM because you need to have some modding experience and know your way around Wrye Bash first. As someone who is new to modding, going all out FCOM is not a very good idea. Best to learn the tools of the trade first. A simple OOO+MMM install is much easier to do than a full FCOM install and doesn't require a Bashed Patch, which is why I suggested that route (and also because it's what I'm using now).

But, once you do have some experience installing mods, you know how to install an OMOD, understand the advantages of BAIN, and comprehend the need for a properly sorted load order, then yes, jump right in!

I can recommend the mods I installed and that I like very much:
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16513 is awesome, makes visiting cities a very pleasant experience.
Ofcourse the utilities http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22368, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20516, http://obse.silverlock.org/
And before you go install I would recommend reading the useful http://sites.google.com/site/oblivionpoinfo/, and http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1084204-bain-mod-installation-projects/page__p__15797987&#entry15797987 also http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1090232-50-steps-to-stable-fcom/.
And now I definitely recommend http://devnull.sweetdanger.net/convergence.html but you need to look in the forum for the FCOM and UFCOM thread and read the info there also I would recommend following the walkthrough from TESIV Positive site, the BAIN install.
As for quest mods I recommend http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3027, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11598, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13814, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14200, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22320, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=26219, http://www.lostspires.com/, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15412, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13714, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14714, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11755, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9858, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5022
As for Homes : http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8235, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16308, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9769,http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3384
Companions: I prefer http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15200 and with her http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=17743, and so you would get the whole experience you need the big quest mod http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23153, also Companion http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=28977 is very nice
As for graphics: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=18305, I use http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=oblivionmods.detail&id=3813
For body I recommend http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=24078, and for male bodies http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25365
For user interface I recommend Darified UI and there is a BAIN version uploaded by Wyre but I can't find the link anymore so you can search for it, and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8958
And of course http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19370
As for tweaks I recommend: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12466, http://theelderscrolls.info/?go=dlfile&fileid=219, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22124, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=21104, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=25078, and I think a must have mods are http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14304 and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14065
