Line sighting

Post » Fri Dec 03, 2010 12:41 pm

Well guys first off i would like to say i am very excited about this game. next i sadly must confess i am somewhat of a nub in FPS when it comes to "Line Sighting" or "Sight Aiming" as some call it. i once played my brothers CoD:BO game and had trouble with aiming the gun down the sights. the sights seemed to block more of my view than amplify it for me. so basically i want to be good at this game and learning how to sight my weapon will be a big part of that.

Could any of you big time FPS geniuses share your wisdom with this young one? :foodndrink:

(Yeah i know laying it on kinda thick but you catch more flies with honey and all that  )

i would say look past the sights, look at what you want to hit and you hands will follow its like riding a motorcycle, if your hand eye coordination is good where you look you hands will aim there. . . i hope that helps?

Other than that i would say it is just getting used to it/practicing, i was the same way when i started fps but now i don't even realize im doing it.

Try using a red dot. Some of the weapons had bad iron sights, but the red dot should help with the aiming.

I heard on Brink that hipfiring is the better option in most cases aside from long ranged gunfights, dont think ADS will be as essential in Brink as it is in COD.

Reflex type sights are usually the best. Depends on the game however.

Before I start an explanation, let me start by saying I play both PC/console FPS, and I never hipfire. Once you get good enough it becomes a near instant twitch reaction, but with all things it requires practice and patience. I, for one, am a competitive gamer, it's a hobby of mine, but I like to push myself to be the best, and therefore there are some tips/tricks online for using the ADS (aim down sight) option.

For starters, I would use the Red Dot sight hands down. It will train you to look at a specific point down range and fire quickly due to the fact that there will be a giant red dot over the enemy. What I normally do when I'm new to any game and using any weapon for the first time is I aim at a wall and fire as quickly as I can to look at bullet spread/recoil (this is easily done by looking at the bullet holes on said wall). Once you find a weapon that suits your playstyle (which there are a variety which I will touch on next), you will feel a comfort that you won't feel with any other weapon. Unfortunately this can be misleading, like in Modern Warfare 2 and the UMP45 which was overpowered compared to the rest of the SMG's (yet I fully admit I used that gun everytime just because it was good).

Next up, your playstyle. Every person has a different playstyle. Some like to cover/attack, some like hit and run attacks, others like being in the front. Since you are new to FPS's, I suggest playing around with all the weapons until you get a feel for what you like to do most. For example, I know my playstyle, and it is run and gun, constantly moving never stopping. My logic behind that is, if you never stop moving, you are harder to hit all the time, which is fact because obviously it's much harder to hit a moving target.

If you have any questions about this feel free to PM me. I have about 15 years of FPS experience under my belt. =)

I preordered on PC for one reason; mouse controls + parkour/smart movement. Mirrors Edge of the PC. All there is to say about that. ;)

And fire away, I have 20 minutes until I'll be playing haha.

sweet. so basically. the main problem i have with ADS is that i feel the gun itself is taking away most of my view, i prefer sights where you still get a full view in front of you(within the circle of view of course). do RDS's have a full circle of view? i can prolly explain that better but to help think of the scope of a sniper rifle. thats what i mean buy a Full circle of view. losing the bottom half of my view actually scares me sometimes. also my style of play is normally find a nice hole and snipe people. i am not good at multi tasking by moving, shooting, and throwing grenades at the same time. something always loses out when i try that.

It sounds like what you were using was an ACOG/COGA sight which personally I dislike the most of any sights because of that exact reasoning; it blocks alot of your view. I bet you will do much better using the Red Dot. I started using Red Dot on COD4 for Xbox, and eventually, instead of wasting that attachment spot I started using other attachments and just using the Iron Sights. Now pretty much all I use are the Iron Sights now that I'm so used to them.

If you weren't using the COGA sight, and the actual gun was the cause, then the Red Dot will actually put your line of sight a bit over the gun and it should shoulder that problem. What I can say about looking down the sights while camping, then I could see what your saying. Something that I normally do is run around without being aimed down the sights, and immediately snapping to any enemies that come into view with the iron sights. I mainly only use the ADS because it reduces bullet spread.

Best way to get used to using ADS (Aim Down Sight) is to first find a weapon that you can stand the sights on, or an add-on like the Red Dot (there are three or four in game) or Scope. From there go into a game and do a little target shooting (at spots on the wall) both from hip fire and ADS to get the feel of how much zoom the ADS gives you.

Keep in mind that in a game like Brink ADS is more for aiming at medium to longer ranges and not always a good choice for close fights (although it depends on how slowly the game aims while zoomed), so pick wall spots that are farther away and just quickly switch between hipfire and ADS for a while.

The longer the distances that you practice from the more noticeable the change usually becomes. Eventually you then want to take it to the next practice and fight live/Bot targets.

Without getting into style of play, a good way to learn how to ADS is to keep your eye trained on your hip fire reticle. Your ADS reticle should be in the general vicinity your hip fire was. It takes time and practice to get better from there. I find moving my player as opposed to my gun helps to line up my shot better while making myself a moving target for my opponent. Of course quick target id is a big assistance, too. Don't get tunnel vision either focusing on one part of the battlefield/screen. Experience fills in the remainder. mp fps can be fun, but also a source of frustration. Best advice I can give you on getting better at ADS in mp fps is to remember to have fun (you'll naturally improve over time). It's only a game after all.

Edit: wow saw Dingles post and i will be asking you questions. hope to see you in game! PC or console?

You may want to post this with the thread that you read. Otherwise Dingles may never see it.

This is one example, though poor since it's a hand gun, but it's one, iron sights.

This is a good example of red dot site.

And another rifle iron sight bud

Good luck and just practice bud, after you find that right weapon for you, it will be awesome, :)
