Fallout 3 Fan... Should I get the other games?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 7:57 pm

I've never played any Fallout game except for 3. I only bought it because I was a huge Oblivion fan and I figured it would be very similar. I know that the other games are structured differently, but I'm wondering if it's worth it to play the others. Any suggestions? Would I like the other games given that I like 3 so much?

In gameplay terms they're very different from FO3 and Oblivion - 3rd person isometric view, with turn based combat. And they're upward of 10 years old, so the graphics are basic by today's standards, to say the least.

If none of that scares you off, and you like the fallout world and backstory, then I'd highly recommend them, as they're both fantastic games.

It's definitely worth it to play the others... But be warned that they aren't remotely like Oblivion.

It kind of depends on why you like 3. If it's just the huge exploration aspect, you'll probably be disapointed. Fallout 1/2 have far fewer places to visit. However, most of those places are fully fleshed out, with multiple sidequests and other interesting things to do.

If you like it for the real time combat and/or first person "immersion" factor, you won't like the originals either. The originals are immersive because of their rich dialog, humor, and details, not because of graphics. Also, the combat system is turn based, so if you think that's boring, you might as well not even bother.

If you like FO3 for its story, you'll probably like the originals. FO3 borrows most of its plot points from the previous two games, right down to the ultimate goal and the antagonists.

the graphics are basic by today's standards, to say the least.

There is, however, a certain charm to them. Especially in the bloody mess kill animations. FO1 and 2 has even more death animations than FO3 does.

A 10 year old game with sprites in a 2d isometric view world. If that suits your fancy then those games are worth a try.

And Cpl. Facehugger. Fallout 3 doesn't use "Death animations". Once NPCs or creatures are dead, the havok engine takes over for the rag doll.

You would probably enjoy both of them. Overall theme is the same though all the combat in the first two are turn based.

They were both very fun games and if you enjoy this theme then you will enjoy them. There are some great mods out for them to enhance the experience, especially for fallout 2 over at NMA.

I really like Fo3 for the story and the humor. The game play is great, but it's not what really draws me in I don't think. I love the looting and the sidequests. Looking at screenshots, it seems to look a lot like Diablo 2. Does it play the same way?

I love them and i'm a 17 year old who normally hates 2d isometric turn based games.

It really is about the story and humour, but needless to say its worth it.

i think you can get fallout 1 free off gametap if you want it, but i reccomend fallout 2 more.

What a bad attitude. The 2d art rendering in both of them are just beautiful. Amazing that you feel you need to have 3d for a game to be what you would call a good game. I call good deep engaging gameplay.

Don't twist my words. All i did was tell the blunt truth. Are the fallout games not 2d isometric view games using sprites? I never once said anything about games needing to be 3d to be good. I respect the Fallout games for their graphics at the time they were made.

Yeah they are kind of dated and ugly but the setting and bloodiness as well as the sheer vulgarity makes them worth playing hehe.

But your focusing on JUST the graphics as if that should be the deciding factor. That's not the most important thing. Is it fun? Thats about the only thing that really matters.

Other than the camera angle, they have nothing at all in common with D2. D2 isn't even really an RPG, it's more of a manic click-fest. Fallout is nothing of the sort.

You can't describe a game based on its graphics. To say "Oh yeah, it's another one of them there archaic 2d iso games" is a huge disservice to what the game actually is, and the game is actually the greatest RPG in history.

I played them all way back and loved them, and am planning on playing Fallout 2 again. gog.com sells it for $6 and there are, as mentioned above, some great mods. Right now I'm waiting for version 1.3 of the Fallout 2 Restoration Project by killap: http://www.killap.net/ Should be out within a month or so, and includes a crapload of bug fixes and quest enhancements. There is also a high res patch available that I don't know much about.

Sure, in a perfect world maybe.

I know graphics are not the most important thing. However, if the OP does not like turn based isometric game, then right off the bat, he will not like the original games. Graphics, although not the only factor, is one of the most important factors.

That, is entirely up to you. If a picture is worth a 1000 words, then a video ought to be worth 2000 words:

edit: (this is a good one too)

Fallout 1 and 2 were great in their time. They remain great storylines and fairly decent non linear play, but, given todays times, compared to what the average gamer is used to, going backwards in time to 1997 technology may prove difficult to do. I've played both games many many times, but i degress, its hard to go back.

That's very true. I, for example, like exploring and the story and so on. But I'm used to see half-way realistic looking environments (My PC is 4 years old, so I'm not the graphics-spoilt kiddie), and Morrowind's graphics are partially backward for up to 3 years. That's why I couldn't force myself to play it, sadly.
I think this isn't a rare case, so when you think about getting an old game, you should consider this point.

Try and forget the graphics (though they do the job perfectly well) and focus on the plot, also getting used to turn based combat can be a bit of a pain but its worth it.

I completed Fallout 3 a couple of weeks ago and spent all last week chewing through Fallout 1, now I'm just starting out in Fallout 2 and generally loving the themes and twists, the writers were clearly at the top of their game when making it.

So if you can get over the slightly chess like approach to combat (which does become more interesting when you finally get the good weapons and of course the bloody mess perk if you're used to modern gore in games) then you will definitely enjoy 1&2 :coolvaultboy:

On a side note, Fallout 3 is for the most part (other than a crummy, rushed ending) a spectacular game, much easier to drown yourself in the wasteland culture and many more fist pumping moments during combat.

Peace

I would say they are worth playing But play Fallout 1 first because fallout 2 is the same gameplay but enhanced it with things like being able to run.

I played fallout 2 first. I tried playing number 1 but just couldn't get into it. ....hmmm, maybe after 8 years it might not be so bad ....

I think the only part that would be frustrating now would be the turn based combat. But it is still a fun combat system.

I think I'm gonna go back and play the old versions. Although I'll download the patches for bug fixes.

I sure hope they come out with some patches for this new Fallout 3, I would give this game a 8 or 9 out of 10 but with all these bugs I have to give it a 7ish. Especially on the PS3, friggin thing freezing all the time, physics engine messing up, etc... They really shoulda spent an extra 2-4 weeks hammering out some of the bugs.

O yeah, get all of them. I've never played the X-Box Fallout: Brotherhood of Steal and haven't heard much about it, but Fallout 1 and 2 have great stories, dialogue, weapons and random fun just like FO3. I wasn't the biggest fan of Fallout: Tactics but some people liked it.
