Fallout 1, I May be stuck without return.

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 5:11 pm

After finding the waterchip and being sent out to deal with the Master, I decided to take up the brotherhood challenge and visit the glow. As warned, I stocked up on Rad-X and Rad-Away, and took two Rad-X one square away from The Glow. I went in, and immediately lost 17 points of radiation resistance. I walked around the hole for a while, but found nothing of interest so I decided to explore the bordering squares in hopes of finding something. However in the process, I accidentally re-entered the glow and quick-saved by reflex. With my Rad-X now worn off, I immediately took in a whole ton of radiation. So much in fact, that after leaving the location I can't even move out of the square without dying.

Now, I Fallout 2, radiation damage happened slowly, so you could go into "Wait until full health is restored" mode in the PipBoy and it would not let you die until the radiation wore off. In Fallout 1 however, the damage seems to all happen at once, so even waiting more than six hours kills me instantly. (This is my second time playing through Fallout, the first was when I was very young and I doubt I managed to get past the first cave, though I did play through Fallout 2 up to six times by now methinks) Anyway, as far as I can tell my only hope right now is either finding a secret entrance into the hole somewhere around and just progressing further hoping to take care of my issue later. Or, somehow cheating my way out of it, my other slots are a few hours and a Deathclaw away, so I'd rather not have to reload.

Any help on this would be appreciated. :]

Im afraid your in trouble...

Your only chance is if you have a rope in your inventory. At the left side of the crater there is a girder sticking out towards the centre of the hole. Attach the rope to it and descend into the crater and you'll be able to scavenge some Rad X and Rad away in the complex.

Otherwise, just try and take the Radaway before you leave the square. Only move one square away, take more Rad away at that point and repeat until your about 3 or 4 sqaures away.

No.. No rope in my inventory. :[ So it looks like my only way is to try and worm my way out square by square. I'm wondering if there are any cheats for this game that I could use to temporarily give myself godmode until I get my hands on something to redeem the situation. Or at least a rope cheat?

Theres a fallout item import tool floating around that you can change items in your inventory to whatever you want and however many, But its rather hard to find i got it back in 2002 and even then it was pretty hard to find if ive still got it on disc at home i could email it too you.

EDIT i just found this btw http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=27

its not the one i used but could work.

Hmm. I tried it, and took another Rad-X and enough Rad Aways to cure my radiation. However still, as I attempt to leave The Glow I die immediately. God damnit, I may have a game-breaking glitch.

What happens if you inch away on the world map, and after inching a little bit, click the arrow again to re-enter. Has your HP dropped slightly? If it does work like that, can you first aid yourself as you repeatedly inch away? (like even after leaving the Glow square, just move two pixels into the next square, click the arrow to enter the map, and heal again?)

Or does it leave you with full health RIGHT up until you step out of the glow square by 1 pixel and then instantly do 100+ damage or something? I had figured it would do like 1 damage per each pixel you travel on the world map or something like that.

The game does instant 100% of damage. I figured out that the game kills me at exactly 8:02 AM in-game time, no matter if I'm radiated or not. Inching away doesn't help because I simply can't move in small enough increments to leave the Glow square, and healing regularly is impossible. I'm simply too far away from the border of the square to leave it before 8:02.

This isn't an idea for a direct solution but... half from curiosity and half maybe to understand what's happening better -- what happens then if you remain in the actual Glow zone, like, actually running around with your characters, to 8:00 (like, sleep inside the zone until 8:00), and then run around until 8:02 comes around. Your guy suddenly dies from full health? Does it say how much damage is given?

(the one little possibility I'm imagining is -- if it IS some sort of bug -- it would be funny if it did not kill you as long as you were physically running around when 8:02 came by (not in the map view), and after that you were free to leave?)

That's exactly the way I found out it's 8:02. I slept until 8:00, and then just walked around for two minutes, at 8:01 I was still in full health and not irradiated, when suddenly: White flash, and I die. So this happens both in-game and in the map screen. :\

Edit: I reloaded, and managed to return to the glow only to find what? My savegame became corrupted and disappeared. This is ridiculous, even with all these community patches the game still remains glitch as hell. Roar, Ill approach it again, thankfully I have a much closer save this time.
