How to determine what causes vaniliia quests to break

I am currently playing 2 vanilla quests in my heavily modded game, and am having problems with finishing up either of them. I am trying to determine how to see what mod (if any) is causing the errors I see.

Canvas the Castle:
This is the stolen painting quest in Chorrol - when I click on the
Spoiler
painting in the west tower and stained carpet
, both the activators do nothing, and my quest is not advanced. How can I figure out what is doing this? Maybe opening up the CS would be one way, but can someone guide me what to look for, as I have never used the CS before. Maybe a small step by step procedure about selecting this, clicking that etc. would be immensely helpful! Mods that affect this area are: Better Cities, but anything could be affecting the activators!

Legacy lost:
Here I am trying to

help restore Weatherleah house to the Jermane twins. Once I get to Weatherleah, my questlog updates that map marker placed by Sabine Laul has been erased (is this a feature of Map Marker Overhaul?), but once I get near, I spot Weatherleah. The quest log updates that the place has been overrun by ogres. However, I just don't see any ogres! Returning to the Jermane brothers, they ask me to kill the ogres, and I get back to Weatherleah to find that there are no ogres. UESP tells me that the ogres can wander, but I haven't seen any ogres after looking everywhere in the vicinity.
. Mods that could affect this area and creature spawns are UL (I forget which one , is it Brena River?), MMM, FCOM etc. Can anyone help me figure out what caused the quest to stall? Something that can be figured out through the CS to see if some mod overwrote the said vanilla spawns in this area?

Open alle your mods in TES4EDIT and see which mods affect the quests.
Open console, click on the activator in the Chorrol quest and write down the form id numbers. Find out which mods affect the activator using TES4EDIT

In my mod list only the UOP edits the Canvas the Castle quest. The original Choices and Consequences also does, but neither the new one or the one you are (I think?) using do.
But are you sure it's a mod problem? You have to do things in a strict order in that quest before some things can be activated. Consult a walkthrough.


Legacy Lost: The quest marker getting erased is from Choices and Consequences.
The Ogres have a AI Package that makes them move towards the X-marker at Weatherleah if the Quest Stage is 10 to 39.
Try using this console command to move you to the ogres to see where they are and if they are behaving correctly:
Player.Moveto 0000CB4A
or
Player.Moveto MS16Ogre01Ref
They are from leveled lists though, so if the moveto command only works with the actual FormID (I can never remember) that will not work.
If the Ogres have been killed Quest Stage will go to 40 automatically.
You can check quest stage by writing from the console:
GetQuestStage 0002B8DB


Also check with TES4EDIT if any mods edit 0003F27B which is the X-marker.
You can also use the player.moveto command on the x-marker to check that it really exists in the game and is at the right place near Weatherleah.

Regarding Legacy Lost, they can wander far.

Legacy Lost is still giving me issues (I had to use console to setstage past the ogres at Weatherleah, as I could never find them, even with placemeat functions).

EDIT: Looking at http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Sins_of_the_Father, it seems that this is not the vanilla progression, must be added by Choices & Consequences or EQR. Time to look at TES4EDIT...

The first Quest Log in your picture is Stage 110.
Is that the entire Quest Log?
Did you enter the Redguard Cave, kill the Ogre boss and retrieve the Sword? If so, to whom did you give it?
In what order did you do things?

This was incidentally the one quest I myself never was able to complete myself using the original C&C, so when I reached Stage 110, i had to use SetStage 120 to complete the quest.
Seems my effort to fix did not work, though. :(

BTW, when you used the console are you sure you advanced the correct quest? Looks like you may have used the console to advance quest MS16B instead of MS16A.


Damned, it been so long since I've actually played the smegging game that I forgot that the topmost entry is the newest. So disregard my ramblings above.

Yeah, that's definitely not the normal Legacy Lost, so I would say it's C&C or EQR.

OK, looks like when you hand the sword over to Fathis the Quest Stage gets set to 110 instead of 100.

This is the result script of handing over the sword to Fathis:


if getstage MS16B == 50     setstage MS16B 80elseif getstage MS16B == 110     setstage MS16B 120


It's possible that Stage 100 is not set since the Condition points to a leveled item. At least TES4EDIT complains about it:

Stage 50:
I've retrieved the Honorblade of Chorrol from the Ogre Chieftain. This has to be the item Fathis was seeking. However, due to the nature of the item, I think someone at Castle Chorrol would be anxious to have this back. I need to decide whether to sell the weapon to Fathis, or return it to the Castle.

Stage 80:
I've given the sword I took from the Ogre Chieftain to Fathis, and he's paid me quite well in return. I should go speak to the Jemane brothers about what's happened.

Stage 100:
Selling the Honorblade of Chorrol to Fathis has left me with no evidence of Albert Jemane's past, preventing me from convincing Guilbert that his father was once a notorious member of the Thieves Guild.

Stage 100:
The Jemane brothers seem to have come to accept their father's secret life. They seemed very happy, at least, that the Honorblade was back in its "rightful" place. I wonder if Fathis Ules would still be interested in buying it if it was "retrieved" by someone?

Try this:
Load up C&C in TES4EDIT and change the Conditions for Stage 100 to the same as Oblivion.esm

Now load the game to before handing the sword to Fathis and see if that works.

Thanks for looking into this Petrus - i really appreciate you tweaking the C&C to a playable state, but i guess this is one of those bugs in it that just remained unnoticed...

I guess it is a technical issue, and not a game breaking one as the quest is closed for me in any case, just that the game is confused as to what happened. Also, I did not wait for the game to correct, and just progressed with my other quests. Returning to the point where this happened would imply going back 20 hours of gameplay, which I am not keen to do.

Fathis doesn't talk to me anymore, but I did not received the Escutcheon of Chorrol either... that's OK - I have a bunch of really good stuff from Arma/FCOM to keep me happy.

Is there a way I can close the quest rather than keeping it in my questlog (either going Fathis' way, or the more honorable way)? Some setstage commands perhaps?

You only get the Escutcheon of Chorrol if you hand the Honorblade to the Countess' steward. But with C&C you should, if things work correctly, be able to steal it back and then sell it to Fathis.

It would help me bug testing if you could make a backup of the ESP and then try what I suggested in my previous message as I suspect it's the condition to check for a leveled item that breaks the quest at that point.

You should be able to close the quest by writing from the console: SetStage MS16b 100
