What happened to the Native Americans?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:44 am

Like the title says, i'm just wondering what happened to the Native Americans in the Fallout world. I've only played Fallout 3 (although once my birthday comes around, that'll change :D), so I don't know what it's like in the earlier games, but I thought it was kind of odd in Fallout 3 that there was no Native American presence at all.

Being Australian, I don't know much about the subject, but i'm under the impression that there's reservations that Native Americans live on. Did these places just get blown away during the Great War, or did some Native Americans manage to find shelter?

Well, since the Fallout timeline diverges sometime in the 1950s, Native Americans had about thirty years of full citizenship rights before then. So in the decades before the war, many could easily have left the reservations and climbed the social and economical ladders to later afford a place in the Vaults. Sadly, it's possible that the people still living in the reservations were impoverished, and it's damn near unlikely that those survived the bombs and radiation.

Any that succeeded in securing a place in a vault would probably end up a minority. And after a few centuries, you'd be unlikely to see if anyone alive currently was of Native descent, and it's even less likely to find anyone even aware of their heritage, history, and beliefs (a lot of American history is largely forgotten among the wasteland populace). And in the Fallout universe, there doesn't appear to be any sense of racial and cultural identity among (mostly) non-mutant humans, so you're not likely to find any area inhabited primarily by a certain ethnic group, not without some special conditions (like San Francisco in FO2).

EDIT--

Fixed some mistakes regarding the Fallout timeline.

AFAIK, the issue simply isn't addressed in the Fallout lore. What happened in the majority of the country is still unknown. My guess is that many of the reservations would have survived intact due to not being in built up areas..

They done got blown up, I suppose.

Native Americans were an ethnic minority before the war (They're somewhere around 3% of the United States' population I believe?) and other than lobbyists there are practically none at all in Washington. Now think how many there would be there AFTER THE APOCALYPSE.

Well nothing at all has really been said about the areas with the two largest reservations, the Navajo in the SOuthwest and the Souix in the northern Midwest. It's entirely possible those areas could have survived and contain survivor setttlements, many of the reservation towns are quite out of the way as it is.

Hmm i'd like to see Native Americans addressed in future Fallouts, could make for some very interesting quests.

I don't think there are any reservations in the DC area so that would probably explain that.

They could have survived and turned into tribals (who aren't in Fallout 3 but are in the others).

Thats a tad offensive, you really shouldn't insult other cultures no matter how odd you find them.

Not logical. Why would the Chinese nuke reservations? I think probably they Native Americans had a better chance of survival, especially say, the Sioux in the Black Hills.

That's quite possible, but so far none of the games has taken place even close to that region, so we don't really know.

Well, lets take a look at a map: http://www.nps.gov/history/nagpra/DOCUMENTS/RESERV.PDF Also, for giggles take a look here http://www.radmeters4u.com/list.htm (This is a site with "Theoretical" targets during a nuclear war. Or I shoud say places most likely to become craters.

If you notice, there are serveral large reservations in the Dakotas. YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE ANYWHERE NEAR THE DAKOTAS DURING A NUCLEAR EXCHANGE. It would be safe to assume that there would be minimal survivors on those reservations. Also, Nebraska would have a very bad day, and the area most likely to become a giant lake is upwind from several large reservations. Same goes for Montana.

Where I could see the Native Americans, I don't want to say doing well, but not as bad as where all the missiles are, would be in NM. Not alot of targets there, but they would be downwind from Cali. And Cali will have a very very bad day.

(Sorry for any spelling mistakes or typos, I have walking pnemonia and they have me all doped up on codine and painkillers)
