Are you only playing with bots too?

Hey guys,

I've been lurking the forums for a while now and I'm planning on going to Best Buy later today to pick up Brink. I just wanted to make an observation for those of you distressed by the negative reviews so far:

I know some of the negative reviews have been pretty suspect, but remember that these pre-release reviews were all based on offline versions of the game where the reviewers played exclusively against bots. Brink was designed from the ground up as a multiplayer game, so it is pretty dishonest of these review sites to rush reviews out the door before they can meaningfully test the live multiplayer against actual humans. Did you only play Tribes 2 or RTCW offline against bots? Of course not. Indeed, you probably shouldn't buy any of these games if you have no intention of playing online to begin with. If a friend of yours said she wanted an FPS but couldn't afford Xbox Live, for example, would you tell her to get Brink? Don't think so.

Gamers are well aware of Brink's multiplayer focus and the multiplayer pedigree of its developers. That said, it's pretty ignorant for these review sites to rate this game based on (A.) the depth of its single player campaign mode, and (B.) how the bots perform in offline mode. Any self-respecting reviewer would have waited two weeks after release to see how the online experience is. Maybe it's great, maybe it's not. Instead, we get a bunch of link-baiting negative reviews that nitpick ancillary parts of the game.

Aye, the majority of the reviews are against bots, and comparing it to Call of Duty standards.

New game comes out trying to not be CoD, you just don't compare it to CoD. Simple.

Welcome to the forums, though. Expect the forums to be hectic for quite a while until the initial rush of new players settles down. Here is your Welcome Turtle. :turtle: We also used to give out links to the Brink Compendium, but that's rather useless now, since BRINK is out.

Yes, to answer your question in the topic, I HAVE to, because, well, PSN is still down (last I checked), lol! :D

The thing is, SD said they were trying to reach the single-player people (like me, who often play Campaign/story modes in FPS'es except Borderlands in which I play offline co-op) as well.
They were interested in making (selling!) a single-player AND multiplayer experience, and apparently, they kind of...didn't do that great on that part, according to many reviewers, so.....

EDIT: But! I'm not that great at FPS games, so the single-player may be challenging and fun enough for me to play it. ^_^ I still don't have the game yet, though....

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys!

I don't mean to pile on top of the "IGN svcks" crowd, but i do think that people need to take the reviews of Brink with a grain of salt. I was curious this morning so I looked up IGN's old review of my favorite online game (Tribes 2) back in 2001. IGN waited a full ten days after its release to review the game, in part to let network issues resolve themselves and also to test the game against other human players. It's too bad they didn't do this with Brink because its multiplayer focus is just as intense as Tribes 2's was. I guess the competition for scarce advertisers has driven a lot of the integrity out of the process.

Exactly! I thought IGN would wait a while for a review to give the MP a good play through before their review.

Well said OP, my thoughts exactly.

I'll judge Brink for myself when it arrives later this week, because it's pretty obvious much of the critical reviews have been saturated with agenda and/or subjective drivel

Im hoping to love the hell outta brink. When i get it today, i hope to enjoy it. If i fall in love, i literally will never go on igns site again (and i visit eveyday). Just remember everyone is owned by someone (in this case Fox ownz IGN) and some people just do not know how to play games. I bet this reviewer on ign has never played a damn shooter outside of cod (probably started w 4 too). That being said, if hes right all along and the game svcks, youll def be hearing from me on these forums. Honestly, if this game svcks, u may not hear from me cuz ill prob get a ban for my rant...

Hey Trizz,

I haven't played Brink yet but I'll be the first to tell you that you should trade in any game that you don't like playing. I'll let you all know how i like it after I pick it up later today. Unlike IGN, however, I'll evaluate the game based on how it performs in the live online multiplayer environment and not against a bunch of bots in the "single player mode."

Im dying to play this game and unfortunately, have to wait to play on the PSN since i got it for the PS3. Is there a set level for the AI or can u choose different skill levels (easy, medium, hard)? Because I feel like turning them up all the way so that I can have a semblance of PVP since apparently the Ai is kinda dumb dumb lol

If the online medium that PS3 uses for muliplayer functionality wasn't down, I would DEFINITELY not just play with the bots, but I don't have the choice at the moment.
