As far as Mournhold, IIRC it's just the Temple District of Almalexia. Almalexia being the capitol of Morrowind.

Because the Daedric font used in Morrowind missed an Y for a long time. It's only used sporadically in Morrowind.

Morrowind is a country, Vvardenfell is an island within that country.
Also, about Mournhold... I've never been sure whether it referred to merely the Temple District of Almalexia, or if it was just an alternate name for the entire city.
You hear "Mournhold" more often than you hear "Almalexia" when people talk about the capitol.

Almalexia ... Here the intrepid traveler would find the center of the Tribunal cult, in the sprawling palace/temple of Mournhold, a city within the city. This is also the seat of government of the Dark Elves, where the priests of the Tribunal rule in the name of their legendary deities.

Y is removed cuz Daedra dont like Y's or X's.

The castle in Mornhold is the seat on imperial power in the province; Hesleth in a puppet governor.

Morrowind is a province of the empire, like how North Carolina is a state in america.

Vvardenfell is an island within that state, like the Barrier Islands outside of North Carolina.

Mournhold/Almalexia is somewhat similar to the Forbidden City in Beijing during Imperial China. I'm not sure whether it actually had a name though.

If you guys will forgive, the Forbidden City and the US State anologies are interesting - but neither needs troops from the Imperial Province stationed there to control them and the Forbidden City was the Chinese Imperial City rather than an occupied province barely under control

My feeling is that the Imperial Legation (as it is called) in Mournhold is a way to show that the Tribunal bow to Imperial power - rather as the Eastern European Satellites did to the Soviets though not precisely either.

Ebonheart and the forts on Vvardenfell are actually Imperial creations though - while the Imperial legation occupies a canton or district within Mournhold - or perhaps I should say 'did'?

Well Solstheim is an imperial territory. The capital of Morrowind is Mournhold. Morrowind and every other "country" is a province of the empire. Vvardenfell is only a small part of Morrowind. There's a large expanse of mainland that surrounds Vvardenfell to the south and east.

/\

Vvardenfell takes up around half, if not more, of Morrowind on recent maps. the Devs probably cut it down for future possible games I guess, as it goes from http://www.imperial-library.info/content/morrowind-map-concept to http://www.imperial-library.info/content/morrowind-map

Y in Daedric both exists and doesn't exist. Tel Fyr actually has a Daedric 'Y' on the cloth sign in front of it, but the map does not, thus we get things like "An Emperial Territor" and "Capital Cit of Morrowind".

So the Morrowind team was indecisive. The design team needs to forward those memos around.

There's no point in bringing up every typo in Morrowind. The game was loaded with them.

were in the lore department. our main job is explaining away dev oversight/gaff with Chim.

Soo.... Daedric Y only exists on some planes, and so we see it sometimes due to our close connection with Vivec.

Lore forum, not Apologist forum.

I completely buy the no "Y" in Daedric though. It's natural that some languages lack certain phonemes. For example, I invented a triangular alphabet with no C's, F's, I's, or Q's.

The fact that Y's are consistently absent is the real evidence that it's not a typo but intention.

Personally, I always felt that the lack of a "Y" was a genuine linguistic trait, and that it added a nice touch to what would have otherwise been a generic fantasy alphabet.

Other than that though, it is a generic fantasy alphabet; the one point where the devs got lazy. I mean it's no real discredit though since it would take a lot of work to invent a Daedric language.

I was joking...

and Keyes managed to continually mis-spell Solsthiem (and admitted later that they were all typos)

I rarely call people on typos anymore, but the irony of yours is too much: You misspelled Solstheim.

Anyways, since learning that the font was fan-made, I kind of just chocked it up to an incomplete creation and then Bethesda finished it internally when they co-opted it.
