An Honest Review

Post » Sat Jan 15, 2011 2:19 pm

I have been following Brink for a long time, and like most of the community had ridiculously and almost obtainably high hopes for Brink. I went to the midnight release last night and played it until 4am. I have since played about 5 hours, completed all the challenges up to 2 stars, and finished the security campaign. This is my honest review of Brink.

The first thing I noticed about this game is that there is a learning curve. I had watched every video on Brink I could find and therefore felt like I'd be able to hit the ground running. That was not the case. I spent the better part of the first hour getting my butt kicked by the AI. However, once I got the hang of the game, it became incredibly addicting. The AI is not the smartest, and when playing solo I found myself completing all the primary objectives mostly alone. They are adept killers though, which keeps the game challenging. Once I jumped into co-op with some of my friends, Brink became one of the most fun FPSs I'd ever played. The S.M.A.R.T. system works great after your initial "trial" period of figuring everything out, and the game is very balanced with one exception: the engineers. The engineers have much more to do than the other classes. One one of the maps, almost all of the primary objectives require engineers. However, the other classes will always be needed. My main problem with engineers is that they can buff their own weapon damage, making them really adept killers, which is supposed to be the soldier's job. The heavy body types are balanced well, offering incredible firepower and a slight bonus to health as long as you have the patience to waddle slowly through the map. The fact that there is only one primary objective going on a time seemed like a drawback at first, but it does keep a constant and epic firefight going, and the slight edge gained by the team who flanks or owns the command posts will help them come out on top. The secondary objectives work well, usually allowing the attacking team to reach the target faster if completed, which really helps in time-based gameplay. The leveling system could use more depth, and I am surprised to say that there really aren't as many character customization options as I thought there would be.

All in all, the game for me did not quite live up to its hype, but is incredibly well balanced, focuses teamwork just as much as they said it would, and is incredibly fun. While I might be SLIGHTLY dissappointed, this game is none-the-less my favorite FPS to date, and I will be playing it for a long, long time, especially if they release some well thought-out DLC. For single-player with AI bots I'd give this game a 7.5/10, and for multiplayer I'd give it a 9.5/10.

Congrats to SD on making a very balanced, fun, and team-focused game! I find Brink worth every penny.

I think Engineers can buff everyones weapon cant they?

Got a question to anyone whose played it much. In the maps where there are big choke points, are there many side passages or is everyone forced into the kill zone?

You will change you mind after a while. I don't think that you will enjoy doing the objectives over and over and over again. This game will get boring after some weeks.

Actually I'm looking at the forum posts now and things seem to have calmed down. More positive stuff trickling through in posts. I think people are settling in and either playing and starting to play online with more humans than bots...or else they have given up and decided not to come online to tear apart my fragile hope.

Wow...that was hectic for a bit there.

I have to agree on the engineer factor. It's the class your forced to be as on one of the challenge maps.

I only had an hour of gameplay on PS3 and I am so ready to get into multi.

I read in the press today in the UK, not until end of May!!!

As for the OP's review, agreed. Seemed like a balanced thought out review - rather than just a fan boi comment or a [censored] fest.

Ever since I heard of this game, I've never even thought about the SP mode. Only reason for it is to level up quicker and gain the unlocks. All about MP for me. Always has and always will be :)

Repeat - PSN will be back in a "few more days". The Official Sony Blog posted that about 40mins ago.

Yea, I also heard something similar. I think they mentioned it like this: "Though not officially confirmed, Sony aims to bring the PSN back online around the 31th of May. This means that the PSN will have had 6 weeks of downtime."

PSN will be back up in "a few more days at least" according to Sony via the official PS3 blog.

You were seen. "A few days" in not solid numeric unit. It can mean either 2 - infinity of days.

I enjoyed this review. 7.5 for bots and 9.5 for multiplayer seems about right. Multiplayer adds that extra dynamic thaat I do not feel was encapsulated in the other reviews as of yet. I feel like the single player vs bots was the overall judging criteria.

I doubt it, as EVERY multiplayer game has repeated objectives, even if it is just to kill. Think about game types like domination or capture the flag or assault. These game types remain popular even though they have less variation than a map of Brink.

I AM disappointed at the lack of a party system...seems like a good way to try to sabotage your own multiplayer team based game. The game itself is incredibly addicting though. I find it very hard to cut off the Xbox when Brink is running, and in my book that is a sign of a good game.

How can you say that when you do the same in every other MP game?! Team Death Match run around shooting people, Domination run around shooting people, Search and destroy run around shooting people. It must get boring running around shooting people. >.>

Nice to read and really encouraging content. All good news for me.

Again though, I hope SD catch on to this want for a lobby system.
