Why it is good to have slow leveling:
To be honest I get it. It is about the carrot. I put so many hours into getting the gold retro lancer on the Gears of War 3 beta that I do actually get it. I spend the time online to get the dangling carrot. Its a personal goal that I set for my self. No one really cares what my gun looks like except me. BUT WHAT YOU FAIL TO UNDERSTAND IS THAT I CARE. We spend soooo many hours just to make out character look like a bad ass. Maybe they could have done a little more with the leveling and spread the goodies out more. So I will continue to play for the next four weeks to get that sweet mask that no one else I play with has. With a game like Brink with the many many many many character customization combinations they don't need to dangle the carrot. The game is focused on team play. New comers to this type of game is taken back. "What no K/D ratio to keep up with. I am so used to that and this new and different experience is......different." People don't want change but slow leveling is the old way. Give me all the goods and let me get to the meat of the game and thats team based combat. People are conditioned to slow leveling to dangle the few carrots they have in the multiplayer game and then cleaning out to do it all over again. People just want to have something to show that nobody else has.
Why it is good to have fast leveling:
WE WANT TO FOCUS ON THE GAME. The leveling as you have read in the many reviews if you don't have the game does not really change game play and the flow of the game. WHY IS THAT. It is because as with the past Splash Damage Games It was about ESPORTS son!!!!!! Competitive gaming. Teams battle Teams in serious matches. They wanted to get that right. So why spoil it with COD/HALO slow leveling to show you are atop the leader boards with a crazy K/D ratio and great lone wolf stats and that Crazy outfit that only the elite has. This is about the team baby. THE TEAM. Play and develop tactics to win the hard choke points and beat that other weak team. SD don't really care about the leveling as much as the COD's because it is about the TEAM. Now that is a draw back on the same hand. I am not a MLG pro that puts hours and hours into a game. I am a grown advlt with a job and a women (and if your in the same boat you know time is limited). So give me something else to fight for. I just want to complete my character and unlock all the stuff. But if I got everything in two days I don't see the use in playing it anymore. I am going to get another game and fight for hours to complete that character. That is how alot of casual to semi casual players play. Small personal goals on top of some fun with friends. So in a since for someone that is not putting the time to get a good team together unlocking stuff is all they have.
So in the end as with every opinion in the world. It is about personal preference. What you like and don't like. I would say it is sad that we (not all of us but most) are conditioned to believe that every first person shooter now has to have unlockable leveling and we debate if it does not and how long it takes. I think the biggest thing that SD did that does not work for the XBOX 360 crowd is no party system. Sorry SD but that is a big fail. Got to have a party system.
