Muse about the name "Dragonborn"

If the world of Nirm is real, along with the people inhabit it, I imagine this might happen...

NPC #111: Have you heard the world is ending?
NPC #222: We're doomed!
NPC #333: But I heard that someone named Dragonborn is going to save us.

NPC #222: A Dragonborn is going to save us from the impending doom!
NPC #444: Isn't someone born from a dragon, a dragon himself?

NPC #444: A newborn dragon is going to save us from the impending doom!
NPC #555: Quick, bring out the sacrificial virgin maiden to feed it!

Town C = /thread

But, now that you mention it, it does sound dodgy. Surely the Dragonborn is actually a dragon himself? Born from a dragon?

*thinks of a khajiit being born from a dragon* = O,O

So what you're saying is that they're Bringing Dohvakiin a free hussy?

...I can roll with that.

BY AZURA BY AZURA BY AZURA, IT'S THE GRAND CHAMPION. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S YOU, STANDING NEXT TO ME. < He manages to make Grand Champion sound disgraceful, so Dragonborn will probably sound really funny. I think they should stick to calling you Dohvakiin to avoid this. A good use of both would probably be below:

NPC444:"It's Dovahkiin, we're saved!"
NPC222:"The Dragonborn has arrived, to arms men of Skyrim!"

Me too, though I feel we'd need mods to actually enjoy it :hubbahubba: .
On a serious note, the name does not imply any particular birth or lineage. It simply came from the prophecy where, for some reason, the hero is called Dovahkiin (Dragonborn in dragon tongue). His/her defining characteristic is that he/she has the same ability as the dragons. Hence anyone with that same talent is also called Dragonborn as a reference to the prophecy.

I like you're way of thinking

Though I find the name of Dragonborn a little odd myself, why would you call someone who kills dragons Dragonborn? I mean, I could understand it if the Dragonborn is supposed to have dragon blood, but I'm not sure how that works either, I mean, dragons are kind of big... But it's just a name, maybe there was originally some logic behind it, but now, I guess I can go along with the logic of calling anyone who fits the characteristics of the "Dragonborn" referenced in the prophecy "Dragonborn".

There might be some logic, but noone knows. This is because the name Dovahkiin was given to the prophesied protagonist by the dragons themselves. And it's not like they were around to be asked about it :) . Guess discovering that logic will be a part of the main quest.

To my knowledge, "dragonborn" refers to the descendants of the Septim bloodline, but seriously, would a common peasant know or understand what it means? Anyone who just found out that Dohvakiin means "dragonborn" would immediately relate the person to be the child of the evil dragon that just burned down his house. A wiser person may try to convince that uneducated, but to a person who only know that dragons are evil, it would take time, and by the mid of the game plot, more than likely, there are more people who think dragons are evil but do not understand the meaning behind "dragonborn".

Farmer: Enough with the talk, kill the damn dragonborn already! Return my farm and pigs!

Exactly. The players name is not "Dragonborn" and I highly doubt it will be common knowledge who the player is and all that. I'm not even sure that the people of Tamriel will even have any idea that Alduin is about to eat the world. We don't really know for sure, but I really really don't want any of those dialog examples to be used in-game. They're just silly.
