Is there a "best way" to remove quest mods?

Post » Sun Feb 06, 2011 10:52 am

It seems like every time I remove a quest mod, it borks things up. I started from a fresh install, and things were running great - I was crashing only about once an hour. Then I removed Adash, and now I'm crashing about every 15-20 minutes. I've had this problem before with other quest mods; that's the main reason I reinstalled everything and started a new game. I rebuild my bash patch after disabling the mod, of course, and I've tried waiting in an interior cell to reset the spawns, just in case it alters levelled lists, but I'm still having problems.

So, my question is: Is there a "good" way to remove quest mods (or other large-scale mods) that doesn't create large-scale problems? Is there anything I missed?

Crashing once an hour is not 'okay' by any stretch of the word.

Some quest mods come with uninstall scripts that have to be run before you remove them, like the one in Kvatch Rebuilt, so you might check to see if Adash needed that to be done. Otherwise it should be no different than removing any other mod.

Come on. That is an unproductive post.
I too have removed Adash and will continue to remove quest mods as I finish them. I have had no correlation between removing that and crashing, allthough I never did start it this time. I have no definite answers to give in this regard, sorry.

Scripts can get saved with your save game.
If the un-installation info in the readme does not state anything differently I hope most quest mods can be removed without problem.
Some, like Blade song, you have to first run an script from in-game before un-installing.
Clean saves inside the testing hall might help before removing quest mods.
Checking for insane bloat after removing mods.

Eh, just some ideas from top of my head (or back of it....)

Cheers!

I don't get the logic behind this. Why bother if you're not going to leave it in place?

Well, it pertains mostly to HOD and the companion mod CM partners.

After I removed the CM dog and the goblin in IC Water district my FPS jumped up quite a bit. So you are correct I might not do this for every quest mod I got.

I uninstalled Adash to see if it would make any difference on FPS and stability, and I felt like I allready had my hands full with quests and would never get around start playing Adash this time around.

Cheers!

I didn't see anything about Adash needing any special actions (I did the translation).

Like I said, I don't think it's Adash in specific - just removing some quest mods in general makes my LO unstable. I think it's just my system; either I've got too much (200 mods), or there's something else wrong. I've done virus scans and never turned anything up. *shrug*

Clean saves inside the testing hall might help before removing quest mods.

How do you clean save to remove a mod? That's generally for reinstalling them.

Checking for insane bloat after removing mods.

Did that - Wrye Bash is really handy in that regard. L14, 70+ hours, and 0 bloat. :D

Thanks anyway. :)

So it was you that translated "zzzArea14SchwarzeZitadelle03" to "Corridors of the White Citadel"? ;)
zzzArea14SchwarzeZitadelle03 "Corridors of the White Citadel" [CELL:##02C41D]
I think there were a couple of other errors with the Schwarze Zitadelle cells.

EDIT: Of course it's entirely possible that the Name of the cell actually contained the words "Schwarze Zitadelle " in the German version,

If it was specifically removing a dog and a goblin that improved your FPS, you might be suffering from the same problem as I and many others: the sounds from animal feet affects the FPS quite a bit. In that case, have a look at this mod: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12331

Yeah, that was me :blush2: . I've since noticed and attempted to correct some mistakes, but Egg Translator ended up swapping the English and German, so the text in my version became German. I don't know what the deal is, but I think that might be part of my problem - after doing that and then removing Adash, I have an empty message box appear in the initial load screen, which goes away before the map loop video comes up. I've tried reinstalling/uninstalling Adash, but it's still there. :(

Hmm...isn't it easier to use TES4EDIT or the CS to fix a few errors?
I fixed the cell names locally using TES4EDIT myself.

Not really. Egg Translator was specifically designed to make all the text easily accessible. Besides, doing it with TES4Edit or the CS requires a working knowledge of those programs. I can do some stuff in the CS, but I have no clue how to use TES4Edit.

Edit: I figured out the cause - it was a mod conflict with OBSE. If I hadn't been so tired and frustrated lately, I would've seen it sooner - I had the exact same problems not too long ago with a conflict between OBSE 18 and SR Super Hotkeys.
