Lord of Souls

Post » Thu Feb 10, 2011 4:59 pm

This got posted in one of the Infernal City threads, but I figured a separate thread was worthwhile.

Amazon has the product page for the next TES book http://www.amazon.com/Lord-Souls-Elder-Scrolls-Novel/dp/0345508025/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1294258691&sr=8-1. Book's called Lord of Souls, and is coming out September 27th.

and this is lore how???

not to be mean though. I also assume that it is refering to Clavicus since, at least in redguard, He is portrayed as somebody who likes to collect souls.

It's lore because it's an official Elder Scrolls story written by an author who was authorized and in close contact with devs and lore masters, that's how.

And if you'd read the first book you'd know the plot and what the title likely refers to. You're not too far off the mark with Clavicus Vile. He may play a role in the story, near the end. In fact it's likely, but there was at least one other character manipulating souls in the plot of Infernal City, and his name is Vuhon. It may refer either to him, or Umbra who is either in cahoots with him or being held captive somehow.

Umbra was taken captive by CV, until Vuhon came into the scene. Once Vuhon entered CV's realm, Umbra pretty much made him created a second integrium, in order to punch out of CV's realm, which has been working so far. However, Umbriel is still a part of CV's realm, and the goal of the two is to pop that bubble, so that it can be part of Mundus, or something like that. Also, Umbra, the sword, has something important to play, and it's likely at Solstheim, due to being picked up by a looter at Vivec, where Umbra threw his blade.

What happened to Helseth? Is it known if he escaped to Cyrodiil or survived and made it to Solstheim after the events of Landfall?

I think he meant that more as in "Why did you post this news in the Lore Section when it probably belongs in TES General?" and not "Why is TIC Lore?"

And the answer to that, is that I figured the lore forum inhabitants would be the ones most likely to get a kick out of the announcement (of a sort) of the next book.

As for the question of who the 'lord of souls' is, my money is currently on Umbra. He/it is the engine powering the mini-dreamsleeve that is the city; and the previous book did make a point of stating that Umbra is a consciousness of some sort, and not just a magic sword, so I would expect him/it to play a bigger role in the next book as a full character.

Nice one, remember in game when Clavicus' hound suggested that Clavicus was obsessed with Umbra and would only cause him trouble? It's nice how they link things up.

We don't know yet if Helseth and Barenziah survived. I hope they did, myself. One of the things I'm looking for in this novel is the fate of the mainland Dunmer; I hope we're told about more than Vvardenfell.

Thanks to Mirander for starting this thread. I'm a little surprised that the sequel won't be published until Fall.

It makes sense really. First major spread is going to be the GI exclusive. That's going to create major hype and excite consumers and the industry. A possible playable demo, and definitely more material in E3 to maintain the excitement, that covers the summer, and then in September, hype is reinvigorated and maintained by the novel until Skyrim's release right before the Christmas shopping season really picks up speed.

(FACEPALM)

not what i was saying. I know the book will be lore, but the contents will be. not just that it's coming out.

Spoiler
and Umbra broke free of Vil'es captivity,
if you read the first book.

The name makes since for umbra because he is technically a demi-deadra prince. He stole a lot of viles power so Lord of souls sounds right for him. Each deadric prince is an embodiment of an idea. Umbra probably took from vile his collecting souls hobby(which he natually had a habit of already). So in a since he represents souls.

Aren't souls kind of Meridia's thing?
At least, I interpreted 'energies of living things' as meaning souls, but I could just be misinterpreting that.

Also, I still haven't gotten hold of Infernal City. D:

Souls are something all the Daedric Princes have an interest in, to varying degrees.

It could refer to:
Spoiler
Vuhon,
Umbriel's master. Makes sense in the context of the narrative.

Clavicus Vile, who likes making deals and bargains in order to acquire souls.

Spoiler
Umbra, who is Vuhon's collaborator.

Every body has an interest in souls. But puns aside, it's true. Perhaps Arkay and Clavicus Vile are most commonly associated with souls, but everyone's got shares in the soul trade.

No, it's nuclear radiation

@DarthRavanger, it's the opposite with Umbra, he's the master and [blank] is his tool. Umbra wants to be free, and he's using [blank] to do it.

Umbra is the master of [blank], but [blank] is the immediate ruler of Umbriel.

Umbra's the sealed evil in a can to [blank]'s evil overlord.

Ehh, half the time I'm just happy I can split the difference between all of the names. Mundus/Nirn, Anuiel/Auriel, Sithis/Padomay/Oblivion, Baar Dau/Ban Dar/Pon Farr/Molag Bal/Bal Molagmar/Molag Mar, An Xileel/Thalmoor/Kothringi, The billion names for Lorkhan/Akatosh and the differences implied in each.

I think we can forgive you on this... for now.
