Should RPG Elements and Tools

Post » Sat Feb 26, 2011 6:08 pm

I have never played an Elder Scrolls Title.

I have played Everquest and Everquest 2 (Kinda like WoW, I think). I have played Bioware RPG's. Played the Witcher (Did not finish) I remember Pool of Radiance.

RPG Games have certainly evolved.. I love the mechanics of the MMO's. I just hate the time sink. I hate having to be online at particular times until late hours. I miss the groups and the team work.
Bioware is good at this. I liked the party, the writing, the tactical combat. I't's like a single person MMO. Th witcher was kind of like that. But tactical combat was not as extensive. I think that's why I got bored.
I remember playing Everquest for the first time.. It was in first person. I find first person very immersive. It can also be startling because you don't know what's going on behind you. I wish Bioware did first person.

But this post is not about those games. It's about what Bethesda is going to put in Skyrim. I have no idea.
Will it be first person?
Will we have tactical combat? How complex is it?
How extensive is the storyline?
Are there side plots?
Will the writers put in suspense, fear, sorrow, joy elements. Movies have this, why can't video games.
Are there romanceable companions?
Is there a collection system?
Crafting puzzle system?

IMHO, RPG games should be like interactive movies full of puzzles for thinking and where I play the part in the story of Arnold Shawarzanegger, Bruce Willis, or Johnny Depp.

Is this what Skyrim will be about?
If not, then what?

nor do we, but base off of oblivion to Arena I will answer for ye.
1. Third toggle with 1st
2. will be abit more complex the oblivons hack n slash
3. Oblivion's plot was somewhat extensive, morrowind's was a tad bit more, Daggerfall the most, and Arena the least
4. Yup, yup
5. At times I s'pose
6. Nope, never have and looks like never will
7. I don't understand the question, but if you're asking about the inventory it's there
8. In Arena-Oblivion the answer is no, But, Todd is adding crafting in this one, dunno about Puzzle though

Edit: have a fishy stick for adding Bruce Willis to this:

Played the Witcher (Did not finish)
That's one to finish... (Best RPG in the last 10 years IMO)

I remember Pool of Radiance.
Which one?

I would expect that it will follow the pattern that TES has since Morrowind, (and perhaps before).
Definitely First Person and free roaming.

I'd suggest playing Morrowind or Oblivion, both fairly cheap now.
It would answer a lot of questions.

Of course some things change, like the combat, but much of it is the same.

I highly recommend playing Oblivion, it is inexpensive and not a very difficult game, but it will give you a good feel for the Elder Scrolls Series. It is kind of unreasonable to have a discussion about a series you've never experienced. Go and play Oblivion, you'll be glad you did.

Elder Scrolls games do NOT have the character interaction or NPC relationship depth that Bioware games do. Actually, Bethesda games(that Ive played, which are 3+4 and Fallout 3/NV) have absolutely no NPC relationships and practically no character depth or progression.

Theres also no real tactical gameplay. Which is probably because theyre first person games and its just vastly different gameplay than a top down party strategy game like Dragon Age. Both are RPG series but theyre really completely different.

Edit: TES isnt "tactical" in the way of MMO party makeup or RTS rock/paper/scissors. Its more tactical like an FPS.

Lets say...
Elder Scrolls = adventure and exploration of environment, and more immersive(first person, to make you feel like youre there) combat.
Bioware(DA, NWN, ME) = character exploration(relationships) , with strategic party combat like an MMO but without idiots.

It is completely different from any type of linear RPG I'll tell you that. That means (as some of us have said) you skimp on character relationships and 'tactical' gameplay and it is more based around free roam adventuring than the main quest. Heck you can ignore the main quest entirely if you want to. After the first time through Oblivion I started to ignore it.

In elder scrolls you play someone, it could be you or it could be some guy or woman but you can pick up any personality, behaviour, etc, etc, you can ignore the main storyline and just mess around as much as you want, woodcutting or something, doing side quests!. the game is supposed to have tons of minigames, the amount isn't confirmed but i'm sure there'll be plenty of those. and this other guy answered it all pretty much. and the game will be offline only.

I played Everquest also, i hate to see what expansions did to the game. i miss it =( but nobody plays this anymore, its almost unplayable, its still the best mmo ever made in my opinion and the best one out there in my opinion too, regardless of how its screwed up. i played on the Bristlebane server.

You forgot to answer this but i'll do that for you. Yes those will be there but its uncertain how well they will be voice acted and animated.
