the Red Dragon Crown

Post » Tue Mar 22, 2011 6:01 pm

Most people think of the Red Dragon Crown, but that’s just jewelry.

IDIOT!

The Red Dragon Crown isn't just jewelery. The color of a king's conquest is red, and the Red Dragons are the specters of subservient crowns. The one Crown is all crowns, hence the Many-Headed Talos, King of All Thrones. The Crown is a devouring, Red Dragon, hungry for the conquest of thrones. And this jewel spins upon his head, drawing all the skies to its King. Maybe that eludes meaning, but I wanted to say it. Talos in his true form is a hydra, which answers why these dragons would withdraw their face, with his departure. There is now some lore behind their color, and the Crown isn't just jewelery.

The quote is from the start of Oblivion, Baurus says these words to the Champion of Cyrodiil.

It’s an interesting idea about the colour… Red diamond as well. It would also account for the amount of red in The Five Hundred Mighty Companions or Thereabouts of Ysgramor the Returned…

It's a shame the mythic importance of monkeys, and a man of many-hats, who shares these hats with the town, until one day he sleeps and the monkeys spy their chance, escapes you. I thought this was an obvious parallel of the Marukhati, who broke the crown of Talos, the Many-Headed, hydra god, with a spinning, crown upon each. The name for each crown, spoken in unison, by the only one who can do so is: RED. DRAGON. CROWN. Now, to leave it at that is enough. Monkeys will do as they please and speak as they please, if for no other reason than they ought to, because such is their worth. That's their place. Moneytruthers just love regal mayhem.

However, that's not the end of Cyrodiil. The Red Dragon Crown is broken, and spread out. The wraiths of crowned kings fly in the dust of moths' wings. There's a Sword for Atrebus, if he should rise, alike as Umbra.

Thank you, Zardak.

Everything red doesn't have to have mythic significance, you know. You don't have to fall to the ground and worship the blood of your enemies. :P

Meridia gave Cyrodiil the color red and its spectrum. That is all we'll discuss of red, for the time being.

Where's your boldness? You know the Monomyth, so use it. What can we add to our Infernal Takeaways, by Cyrus the Restless' example? Let's just look at the characters and compare, we'll get somewhere, I'm sure.I began with Faf Naf and the Red Dragon Crown. Each are sundered; the Crown in the fashion of its ghost.

Reminds me of Pelinal. Didn't he have a screaming red diamond in his empty chest?

Pelinal was the diamond nurtured by Alessia, from egg to Reman, if that helps.

I think it's just reinforcing the "Red Diamond is the Empire" symbol that they've got pasted on every flag in the Empire (with a dragon on it, too). At least the AoK was the key to commanding the giant mythic model of Aurbis. Control that, you've got the world, you don't need Dragons, really.

See, while imagery and the symbolism behind imagery is important, this line of thinking leads to making how many flags you decide to fly out your window somehow mythically significant. Which then you're going to tell me Joe Imperial's decision to order Eel soup last night is the reason why Dragons are invading Tamriel at this precise moment.

Also, I seem to have it stuck in my head that the crown was created after Tiber. I probably am wrong though because I don't think we get another mention of it. But it could, and that would threaten your connection to Talos.

Turning the insignificant not just significant but rather into a special kind of awesome is perfectly in spirit with good lore. Flags and banners are symbols (Eel soup is generally speaking not) and symbols are the stuff of magic. As for the crown:

"Vivec then saw the moths that would come from the starry heart, bringing with them dust more horrible than the ash of Red Mountain. He saw the twin head of a ruling king who had no equivalent. And eight imperfections rubbed into precious stones, set into a crown that looked like shackles, which he understood to be the twin crowns of the two-headed king. And a river that fed into the mouth of the two-headed king, because he contained multitudes."
(emphasis mine emphasis withdrawn)

So yes, the crown (or the idea of the crown) is significant. A symbol of enslavement to mastery (the very presence of Talos compels the world and that compulsion binds Talos in place, though that place is mastery). Props to the OP for adding colour to it.

One? Or a swarm crowding his ruling faces like crimson ancestor-moths, detaching spores (larvae) that rust their scales in the red river?

Turning the insignificant not just significant but rather into a special kind of awesome is perfectly in spirit with good lore. Flags and banners are symbols (Eel soup is generally speaking not) and symbols are the stuff of magic.

But then what is the difference between a commoner and a hero/king/god/whatever? The argument would be, someone who isn't mythically significant in their actions or self. But if Joe Imperial can wrap himself up in enough symbols so that just from the sheer weight of symbolism attached to him, he becomes mythically significant, then those eels become dragons and his stomach, emblazoned with that giant red diamond, becomes the Empire and dragons suddenly see the Empire as the source of their doom and decide to [Nummit] it up.

Sometimes those two planks of wood lying across each other are just two planks of wood. So when are they symbols? When people make them symbols. I'm not arguing that the crown isn't symbolic, I'm just saying that the imagery is different. It isn't about dragons (unless Lady N is right), but it's about the Empire, laid across the Emperor's brow. The Empire is the Emperor's to deal with. It's the AOK that's the Emperor's symbol of dominance across the land. The Empire is the projection of that dominance and that then twists back around to the Emperor controls the Empire.

"But Dagon," you might say. "Why the name 'Red Dragon'?" A Red Dragon is yet another symbol for the Empire, hence the dragon emblazoned on the red diamond, hence Nafaalilargus' scale color, likely hence Ysmir's coloration too.

Also, http://img1.videos.com/thumb/yt/o/ytC-CLcNe0yao.jpg is relevant to the discussion.

If Joe Imperial were a significant story element, he would not be Joe Imperial.

You don't seem to have an internally consistent position, though - even in a single post.

Thus the plot of the latter three TES games.

Yet. He is not a significant story element yet.

Joe Imperials make the best heroes, because they are Joe Imperial - children's stories are replete with them. He is the assistant pig-keeper.
