Why are the Dunmers far away from other Elven races?

Post » Mon Apr 04, 2011 3:47 am

There is something I don't quite understand, why would the Dunmers be so far away from the other elves?

Summerset Isles and Valenwood and Pyandonea are down in the south west and far away from Morrowind, why is it Morrowind (or was, after the red mountain exploded :P) that the Dunmers chose?

Why not settle in Elsweyr or other places close to the other elves?

Was there some sort of an 'exodus' or a great journey or something? Did they originate in Morrowind? (that is, not connect at least species-wise to the other elves?)? etc. etc.?

You might say that.

Typically when people move out, they try to get as far away as possible from their overbearing parents.

Same deal.

The Dunmer were formerly Chimer, and the Chimer were essentially a sect of Aldmer. The Tribunal stealing godhood at Red Mountain was the event that caused the change from Chimer to Dunmer, so in a way, yes, the Dunmer originated in Morrowind.

Super deluxe short story:

Aldmer resides in Summerset. Aldmer hate Nirn and want to return to their former spiritual selves. Aldmer worship the Divines but hate Lorkhan.

Three Daedra appear to Veloth in a dream and convince him to lead a sect of Aldmer to the promised land, Resdayn. These Good Daedra teach Veloth many secrets which he teaches to his followers. A sect of Aldmeri led by the demigod Trinimac try to stop them. Boethiah eats him and speaks in his own voice, calling Trinimac a liar. He then excretes Trinimac as dung that becomes Malacath. The followers of Trinimac become the Orcs and flee for the hills.

Veloth and his followers arrive in the Promised Land to discover it's already occupied by the Dwemer. The two clans quarrel for many years until they unite against a common foe - the Nords, allied with the Orcs who had previously fled. The Hortator or War Leader of the Chimer people discovers that the Dwemer are hiding a profane secret under Red Mountain - the Heart of Lorkhan, and are planning on using it to elevate themselves to godhood.

Details of what follows are sketchy but the important part is that Nerevar ends up dead, the leader of House Dagoth ends up presumed dead, and all the Dwemer disappear without a trace. The Tribunal take the three Tools designed by the Dwemer Sorcerer named Kagranac and make themselves Gods by binding themselves to the Heart. This angers the Daedra Prince named Azura, and she curses the Chimer people, turning their skin ashen and their eyes red. She also vows Nerevar will return to set things right, as he was her loyal priest. Sotha Sil mocks Azura however, and proclaims to the Dunmer they should be proud of their new appearance because it signifies the dawn of a new era. The Tribunal take the spot of the Good Daedra in Dunmer religion and Morrowind as a nation is more or less solidified.

It's all right there in the in-game books. You might wanna mosey on over to the Imperial Library and read a few of 'em.

In short, Saint Veloth led the Chimer to Morrowind. The Chimer became the Dunmer.

They all probaly originally appeared near the southwestern edge of Tamriel, possibly the Summerset Isles.Dwemer ruins are found in Hammerfell, and rumoured (and judging by a shot in the gameplay trailer) to be found in Skyrim,so the Dwemer were probaly all pushed North, maybe due to their love of industry.

The Dwemer are mysterious. We don't know when they split off from the rest of the Aldmer, but it must have been very, very early for two reasons: A. They were already well established in Morrowind when Veloth and his followers arrived, and B. Their worldview was so radically different that is must have taken quite some time to become so culturally distinct.

Akavirguy -- Are you referring to the Dwemer ruins at Stros M'kai? Those happened later, when the Dwemer and Chimer united to form Resdayn.

All sources seem to say the dwemer were in Morrowind first. Also, a clan of dwemer traveled to Hammerfell, due to the alliance between Chimer and dwemer, and that clan did not like it. And as legends say, the head of that clan threw Volendrung and it landed where Hammerfell is (hence the name, Hammerfell).

Must you spend each and every thread ranting about such trivial matters? Do you find some comfort in accusing people of "Dunmer Worship" while you lie prostrate at the altar of zero punctuation?
