Brink, the new standard to FPS gaming?

Post » Fri Apr 15, 2011 2:05 am

As we all know, Call of Duty, whether we like it or not has indeed set the standard for first person shooters (< saw that as someones signature xD).
But for those of you who have played or are soon going to play it (tomorrow :D can't wait!), do you believe that brink after a few more patches and updates can compete with COD?
or do you think Brink is in it's own league and will bring about a new style of gameplay with future FPS games?

Only played for a few minutes but to compare this game to COD is a very very very ... er... wrong thing to do. It's not a case of being better and setting new standards as it is putting up a new ladder right next to FPS gaming.
You'll see what I mean. (got mine a day early :P)

I don't know why people expect so much from Brink... afterall it's just a nice, a bit different shooter game in the endless swamp of FPS games. It will appeal some people, and some will hate it (meaning gameplay-wise, the issues with performance will hopefully get fixed). Brink just showed that you can still do different kinds of shooters, not just the basic brown military-FPSes. It will be the same as with TF2 I believe, there will be a solid playerbase which will play the game while "CoD [censored]" stay with their own games if they like them more. Just as long as we don't get unlockable hats that started the destruction of TF2 (oh wait...).

No. Brink is nothing like Call of Duty.
And no this won't set a new standard as this game didn't really add anything ground breaking, this type of team based game has been done before. Brink merely added in some innovations to the genre.

Adding nothing ground breaking and adding innovations are two contradictory statements

it is a great change from all those fps that are all pretty much the same but with different story-lines. I haven't played the game yet
but its great to see a change seeing as we haven't seen one in...well... a while

Its a niche game, like Shadowrun or TF2. The only reason stuff like CoD or Halo are more popular is because theyre well polished(which comes with having a large series) and they offer many different types of game modes for different people whereas games like Brink do not.

Brink? Set a new standard? Are you kidding me? Quality games set standards. Most people won't even remember Brink by the end of the month unless they're one of us unfortunate few who actually paid for it.

that indeed is true. to be honest I've never liked any of Bethesda's other games. but this one deffinitely is unique. so I'm really eager to give it a go. that plus i got it for free...pre-ordered at least xD

Bethesda only published it, its Splash Damage who made the game. Brink could be really awesome with some more content updates and bug fixes, and I hope they do so and its popular enough to make a Brink 2, but it needs a bit more polish. I wouldnt say it sets any kind of new standards yet but its definitely going to have a solid fanbase.

my bad xD
well let the team at Splash Damage do all the repairs and updates necessary so that everyone who does play Brink, can enjoy it.
wow are you not happy with just the 1st Brink? :P

Brink is not like COD and is definitely trying NOT to be which is why I really am enjoying this game. I loved the single player campaign in COD MW. Absolutely loved the teamwork feel of it, but did not care for the online multiplayer. Brink is a great team-style game. Blindly killing enemies in Brink doesn't get you much in the way a COD game does. Brink is great in the multiplayer mode and really rewards teamwork. You actually feel like you have a common goal. I think Brink will have its own niche. I think COD is mainstream gaming like American Idol, it will sell copies just because of its name recognition. But, for me, I need a great story and Brink has it with a cool setting. Customization is awesome. Love seeing my character in the cutscenes before and after a match. So cool.

No, not really. I think it made some changes with adding SMART and focusing on objectives more, but team-based gameplay has been done before---Team Fortress 2, SD's previous entries, etc.

It's definitely an interesting niche game.

Team Fortress 2 is a much better and varied class based shooter. CoD has better gunplay mechanics. Just about every other game released has done so with better code. So I guess if you are saying that it's the new standard of mashing up generic mechanics from multiple games, including no single player, and having a downright unplayable piece of software on the X360 - then yes, they are the new 'standard'.

People are really overstating the complexity of Brink. It's pretty straightforward.

I honestly hope not. Brink does get a thumbs up for trying some new things but ultimately it wasn't enought to impress. Honestly the Parkour is about the only thing that truely gets a satified nod from me but other than that...the whole "genre" breaking idea needs to head back to the drawing board.

Don't worry about competitive gaming, it will happen. No FPS will really ever be bigger than COD, Brink is just its own type of game with a loyal community.
