Can an Assassin leave the Dark Brotherhood?

Post » Sun Apr 17, 2011 4:08 pm

I'm jotting down some notes for a possible companion for Skyrim. So my question is "Can an assassin leave the Dark Brotherhood?" I'm talking just leaving and cutting all ties to the guild, not just forgo any contracts.

Would the other members go after this outcast? Or would said person have to just deal with a ghost like in Oblivion?

That's one branch of the Dark Brotherhood. We don't know how the Skyrim Dark Brotherhood will operate.

It's the only one I recognize. The one in Oblivion was an embarrassment, and the one in Morrowind doesn't have enough to really judge, other than they have a tendency to trip on a branch, even when there isn't a branch.

I already know that once you leave, for whatever reason, you can't get back into the guild. Makes sense. But if you just upped and left them, would they send missions to kill you?

The lore article mentioned the Crimson Scars, but they were planning to kill other members of the DB, so of course the DB went in and killed them. And, with Argonians, they see desertion as something worth death. But how do the others see desertion?

Depends. If you did something to piss off the DB when you left, they'd likely send someone to execute you. Likely, they may send people to spy on you, just to make sure you do not spill the beans.

With the argonian thing, it was the Shadow Scales that did that, not the DB. You were only contacted because you just happened to be there when the DB argonian, who was also a Shadow Scale, learned of the deserter.

Also, the Dark Brotherhood hates competition. It's either the Dark Brotherhood, or your death.

You can leave.

In a pine box.

If there's that much left of you.

Have you seen what a fully trained Nightblade can do?

So, if a member went rouge and started doing some freelance assassinations, that would warrant the Brotherhood to go after that person until he/she is dead (or they give up)?

yep. You got quests in the DB to assassinate rogue DB members and freelance assassins, along with the employer.

I would think that they are way more forgiving than the Morag Tong would be if you left.

Of course I did. Except these random quests don't really say much about lore, at least to me. If you play Daggerfall long enough, you could assassinate a thousand renegade members. The way I see it, it's one thing to mark a former member who betrayed them to the guards, vs. just some random member who has no back story or explanation whatsoever. I suppose the limitation of that game forces us to fill in the holes. Oh well.

EDIT: OK. I read some of the specific quest details. And the dialogue clearly states that the DB does not like competition. It also seems that the "renegade member" quest is not about someone who deserted, but a traitor. That is different.

DB knew if they fought the Crimson Scars they would be no match. That's why they snuck in and killed everyone while they slept. Well, assassins will be assassins.
