Modding Skyrim

Post » Wed May 04, 2011 7:32 am

Yes, I've had experience working with a team of about 40 on a large Dragon Age mod, Dark Times: The Conderacy of Malkuth.

We primarily use Skype to collaborate, and an online database for the toolset.

So yes, not only do modders tend to get together for particularly ambitious mods, but members of one team can have people from everywhere from slovakia, to england, to california. There's remarkable cooperation and synergy from so many different cultures, and the individual's I've worked with from other countries speak remarkably good english.

Well its good to know modders work like that. Keep up the good work

I'm probably going to be getting the PC Skyrim in a few years, when i have to buy a new computer, so I'm hoping that some awesome mods will be released by then. Mostly i want content, i don't care too much for better graphics

They even have a mod for Oblivion called Nehrim that is basically a whole new game that just uses Oblivion's system to run. You can even uninstall Oblivion after installing it and it will still work. It's a beautiful world with a 50 hour main quest and some sidequests.

My computer can't even run oblivion without drastically reducing the view distance (it looks like Morrowind). It's rather weak.

I know, I'm just saying there's some pretty awesome stuff that modders do. That one does take a lot to run though. My computer runs Oblivion pretty well on nearly highest graphics with 2x antialiasing, but I still get a whole lot of lag in the main city of Nehrim!

Hm maybe i should check it out. I cant play Oblivion's normal game with such a short view distance, because i've played it on Xbox 360. I could just try to pretend this "Nehrim" is like a morrowind mod.

I can guarentee you'll have gigabytes of mods to download, haha. There's a lot of modders, including me, dying to mod an open world game again.

Bioware games are great for modding great stories and dialogue into - Starcraft 2 is great for multiplayer custom games - but Bethesda games have a special quality to them when modding that's so rewarding, especially because you get to tell stories and give new content through a first person perspective.

Which reminds me, I forgot to put in my last post that I'd like to put in a horror mod - which is only really possible with a 2nd or 1st person perspective. Dungeons of Ivellon was one of my favorite Oblivion mods and scared the *Censored* out of me, I'll try to top that for Skyrim.

No, I don't think you should! We were just discussing what great things modders can do... your computer will not be able to run it if you have so much trouble with Oblivion. There's loads more content it needs to load.

who cares.

like seriously why would you make a big post about OH IT'S NOT REALLY A NEW ENGINE EVEN THOUGH THE RENDERING SYSTEM IS NEW AND THE LIGHTING IS NEW AND THE ANIMATION SYSTEM IS NEW AND PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING ELSE THAT MAKES UP AN ENGINE IS DIFFERENT. nobody cares.

the jump between what Morrowind and Oblivion were capable of in terms of modding was enormous, even in how the construction set was laid out. the jump to Fallout 3 was pretty considerable, too. even if the games look identical on the surface the underpinnings can be so dramatically different as to not even resemble the predecessor in any meaningful capacity. yeah it'll almost definitely still use their cute scripting language, but there could be so many new functions that it'd be like starting fresh to some people. yeah it'll still probably use .NIFs (though i'd be kind of surprised if they didn't actually rename the file format to like .BSM or .BSF or something) but there's also a brand new animation engine, and a dramatically overhauled implementation of FaceGen (or maybe their own proprietary solution!).

--

i am PSYCHED for mods, even though i probably won't use any of them and i'll just wind up making my own personal tweaks like i did with Morrowind and Oblivion and Fallout. i'm mostly excited to see what people can do with the dialogue system - the way they've described it seems like it could potentially lend itself towards unvoiced dialogue a lot better than Oblivion did, which means we might be seeing a good number of really interesting quest mods, which is always fun.

i for one intend to finally implement a QUEST BOARDS mod that i've been kicking around since before Oblivion was out, now that there's the whole Radiant Story thing and i've thought of a way to actually make a physical bulletin board without having to learn how to model anything. totally pumped to see people call it [censored].

And my goal for Skyrim is to increase my skill at modding, using the construction set and 3d modelling thousandfold so that maybe I can make a Hammerfell city such as Dragonstar. I'll probably never finish it, but if I ever do, I'll try and make the region compatible with your mod.
