did helseth kill the old king?

Post » Sat May 07, 2011 7:09 am

i have been playing daggerfall and morrowind lately, and helseth is a character who intrigues me. from being a minor political element in daggerfall, to being king in morrowind. However, even with "the common tongue" in morrowind accusing helseth of being a poisoner, and the book "a game at dinner", i still am not sure that he did kill the old king and his heir. my question is whether or not there is any conclusive proof of helseth being a poisoner/murderer, like there was with vivec killing nerevar (36 sermons+sermon 0).

As far as I know, the question has been left ambiguous, as with most other issues in the Elder Scrolls games. I kind of like Helseth and his mother Barenziah after reading the dev Ted Peterson's take on him in the past, so I prefer to think that he didn't kill the king, but I don't think it's ever been proven.

Hopefully the two of them didn't get killed during the Red Year when the Ministry and Morrowind fell, but they haven't been mentioned in Greg Keyes' novel "The Infernal City". It would be interesting if they were mentioned in the upcoming sequel, but I somehow don't think they will be.

It's heavily implied he did, at least to me, but hasn't been proven.

being the king of morrowind, his legion of personal elite guards, and not to mention his epic amulet,(+200hp/sec!) i do not even begin to question whether or not he survived the events in morrowind. where was this commentary with the dev about him?

It wasn't a commentary, but during Loranna's RP around 2005-2006, Ted Peterson used to join in sometimes. He was the only one allowed to write certain characters like Helseth and Barenziah -- I had the feeling at the time that he had created them during the game Daggerfall, but you'd have to ask a Daggerfall veteran which dev created which character, since I've never played it. I think the moon falling may have hit Mournhold harder than the Argonian invasion. The novel "The Infernal City" gave me the impression that the Argonians didn't settle in Morrowind in great numbers -- it sounded as if they had small settlements at best by the time the city Umbriel passed overhead on the way to the Imperial City.

Factually, of course got where he got by assassination. In ways that matter (politically, historically), no, the old king died of perfectly natural causes and his heir died in an unfortunate, but wholly coincidental, accident. That's how history works.

This. I really hope Barenziah lived.

And knowing Helseth's track record(blackmailing at a fairly young age and all), he probably did it. But again we don't know.

It's been implied that both Barenziah and Helseth let that particular copy of the Common Tongue circlulate because it gave Helseth some kind of political fearmonger standing. Whether it's true or not is up to your own opinion, but that fact that he was devious enough to cash in on the rumour tells you most of what you need to know about his character.

Publishing The Game at Dinner is the political equivalent of starting a rumor that you poisoned the school tough guy.

During the time of Morrowind, yes. Technically, as the Imperial Ruler of Morrowind, he has lots of power. But most Dunmer would prefer to listen to their gods at the Tribunal Temple. After the death of the Tribunal, however, I'm sure the position became much more popular and powerful.

No, enchant your own!

We don't know for sure either way. One of the many many things that is great about Bethesda they let you decide how want the story to go.

Though now, the position is powerless, the constiuents are pancake corpses, and an argonian probably threw the throne out with morndas' garbage.

Oh please, they turned it into fertilizer for the trees. Give the lizards some mythic credit.
