More role playing options in Skyrim, please! Role playing is

Post » Sat May 14, 2011 6:22 pm

I got really tired of people talking about gray shades (not to say that we don’t need them, we do). My last topic specify focused on evil, dark and jet black role playing. However I see the need for a different discussion.

Point well taken, so let’s make this a proper poll.

Now let’s see what role playing in Skyrim should be all about!

Thank you

Please do not click all options!

We already have http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1174077-more-choices-for-evil-role-players/ http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1174204-gray-areas/ about this, one of which was your own. The discussions on both topics go more in-depth than the poll does.

Quests should have more than one resolution! And I hope (wishful thinking I know) that the main quest is not completely on a rail either.

My first pole and topic was focused on evil quests only! Please read it carefully. This is very different because i am including MORE than just evil quest. This topic is focused on many different styles of role playing. Totally different!

Both topics focus on only 1 aspect. One focuses on shades of gray, second one (mine) focus on lack of black quests only. This topics focuses on all extensive role playing options.

as I have said before, sometimes in real life there are white options, there are black options, and there are gray options. Really they should be mixed up, so some quests have a white and gray option, some have a gray and black option, some a white or black option... and some having white, gray and black... or two gray options... possibly more options of any kind. It's never going to be just gray, and it's never going to be just black and white so it should be mixed up and with ways to escape certain things, so that you aren't forced into only selecting an option you don't really want to select, like say in Shivering Isles there was a quest in Split, the only methods to complete it was murder... simple as. There was no option to speak to another NPC and agree to leave split alone or diplomatic options at all... you could either be evil or get the quest stuck in the quest log.

I absolutely HATE being designated as good or evil for the more complex moral decisions. I can get the fact that Daedra are evil and all that because they slaughter thousands and that Alduin is evil because he is going to slaughter all but I don't want to be judged if I deny someone something. Mass Effect particularly pisses me off in this juncture but I'd do best not to go on that tangent here. Give me the options and don't judge me for what I do.

I think quests should have more than one outcome, for good or bad characters. Only side quests though. The main quest should have one outcome and feel slightly linear, so to keep lore for the next games easier. Than again, since we have dragons... One might end up breaking...

Whatever the topic is about might be different but they all branched out into discussions of the same exact things because they're all topics of basically the same issue.

We need to see statistics. Because discussing is one thing, but a poll is the only thing that can truly back up what is being said. So far statistics on having all 3 choices are winning.

This post is geared toward it being a poll, not a discussion, because we have discussed this topic more than enough times.

I hope that a poll like this can influence Skyrim development and give people exactly what they want in role playing.

I don't really care if it's just black and white, at least it will be progress when compared to Oblivions linear quests.
So yes, more choices in quests, that's what roleplaying is about, defining your character, if I get a quest to capture a famers runaway hens then I want to be able to bring them back safe and sound, bring them back and then break their necks in front of him or give them to a starving crazy woman down the road.
No matter the quest it should have at minimum 2 outcomes.
And Speechcraft or whatever it is in Skyrim should have a greater role in the games quests.

There are games that are designed for this (FO:NV, for instance. Or some of the Bioware games). And there are games that are all about being The Hero?.

And that's fine. Not every game needs to be every thing. Knowing what the purpose/goal of your game is and sticking to it is good design practice. Keeps you on target.

Personally, TES games have always been sort of Hero-focused for me. (Could be that Prophesied Savior thing that it's got going on.) So, personally, I'd say - keep your moral ambiguity in games that are meant to be that way. Don't feel the need to shove it into every game under the sun "just because".

Just my $0.02. :)

I don't think we need another poll about this. We went over this last week. And the week before.

Seeing as it's a roleplaying game then whatever gives people a better way to roleplay is an improvement. (as long as those additions are worth a damn and not just tacked on (like wifes and children in Fable games.))

Grey is good. Especially in the main quest. I want to struggle trying to figure out what the 'right' thing to do is. Though I wouldn't want EVERY quest to be a choice between sacrificing an orphan or a puppy (the orphan would definately lose that one, for the record). But some.
