Fading Patience

I like Brink. I think the gameplay is fun. I even had respect for SD before this release. I am trying really, really hard to give Brink a chance, but SD is making me angry. Very angry. For starters, the lag on the 360 makes online play unbearable. Before you people who have not played it or seen the footage start shouting "It's p2p so your internet just svcks", know that this is not the case. My internet is a smooth direct connection. On ANY other 360, I can host a full online match without any players experiencing lag. Yet, when I host a match on Brink, it lags once the match hits about 3 or 4 humans.

So, like the rest of the community, I assume it will be fixed in a timely manner and try to remain as patient as possible. I decide to check the news feed on Brink's official website to see if they have announced even an estimate release date for a fix, only the find that the only recent news updates are the reviews of Brink that were favorable. Instead of handpicking reviews to feature, why not let us know what is going on? Yes, they released a rather pathetic statement that said something along the lines of "we are aware of a small lag problem on the 360 and are working to fix it", but that was a few days ago. The problem is not small, and I for one would love even an estimation of when I can play this game that was designed for multiplayer online without lag.

However, up until now I managed to remain patient, but I just hopped on Brink for 5 minutes before cutting my Xbox off in disbelief. One, apparently SD has taken the time to create a new playlist/game mode called Big Teams, which is fine, except for the fact that no amount of new game modes will make up for the fact that online is unplayable. Why not fix the lag, and THEN focus on more online features like the all-but-forgotten lobby and more game modes? After I discovered the new game mode, I decided to hop online to see if the lag was fixed yet. The answer was no, but even more disturbing was that during the 3 minutes of online play where the lag was at least playable (but still very bad) I was killed multiple times by lights and mediums wielding the heavy miniguns.

I really do feel like this game could be great, and I want to give it a chance very badly, but it seems like (for now at least) things are not getting any better and new exploits are already being found. Honestly, I know no game is perfect at release, but this is just silly, and I think the way that SD is handling this is not good at all. Prioritize. Let the people who bought the product know when it will be playable in the news section instead of handpicking the good reviews to try to sell more copies to other people. Focus on fixing the online play before adding new online features.

I have lost a lot of respect for SD these past few days... :nope:

We have been working on updates for Brink to address the lag issue that some people have reported they were experiencing.

In the meantime, we have made a configuration change for 360 users (which will be available to the PS3, once PSN is up) that alters the number of human players when matchmaking for “Campaign” and most ‘Freeplay’ modes to eight total human players. This new configuration will allow those connecting to and hosting matches (particularly those with lower upstream bandwidth) to more reliably find and connect to quality hosts via the match-making process – resulting in less lag and more fun. This change is being rolled out today and will be available worldwide.

For players who haven’t been experienced lag, we’ll still support 8v8 on all maps via a new ‘Big Teams’ configuration in Freeplay, and through custom settings in Private matches. There is no download required for this update and it will be available automatically the next time you log in to play Brink and launch either campaign or standard Freeplay matches. This should allow players new to the Ark as well as veterans to find quality matches suitable to their preferred play style.

We are also releasing an incremental update for PC players via Steam that addresses AI, GPU, and server issues. See the http://store.steampowered.com/news/5464/. Many of these fixes are being included in the full update for the 360 and PS3 versions.

We would like to thank you for supporting Brink and for your continued feedback. To show our appreciation for your support of Brink, we will be making the first DLC for Brink available for free when it is released. This DLC is planned for June and will offer additional maps. We’ll continue to provide announcements about the next title update, as well as the first DLC release as that information becomes available.

Hang in there bro, but I would have rather they delay the game than put it out like this. It really needed another three months or so to polish. SD has loss a few points with me, I just wouldn't have thought they would release something like this that was obviously not finish. Game play is Great and I do mean GREEAT!

I love the fact that they are at least working on the issue, and free DLC is always a plus, but it seems like their "solution" was to just take most matches from 8v8 down to 4v4, which I guess COULD technically lead to less lag, but that seems like an easy way out. Maybe I misunderstood it, but is seems like they're just cutting down on the number of humans as opposed to really fixing the problem. If I'm wrong, and I openly admit that I could be, please let me know and clarify what's really going on if you could.

Thanks.

To properly patch xbox takes time. Microsoft requires a longer time for testing than most anyone else. I am quite sure this is something to assist us while we await a proper patch.

Ah, ok. I had glanced over the "in the meantime" so I thought this was their solution in and of itself. Thanks for clarifying for me.

At least it appears that they are starting to handle this properly, so I'm at least content to give them more time. I'm still ridiculously confused why they moved the release date forward though.

Temp fix is better then no fix, right?

I do like the free DLC idea. Wonder what it will include for my character. I'm kind of addicted to creating stuff. Weapons? Clothes? Under-slung Flamethrowers? Fresh flowers?!?
