Bosmer can't use Alchemy?

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 12:50 am

So I was wondering, from a lore perspective (not gameplay) if Bosmer would be breaking the Green Pact by using alchemy? Does the Green Pact only count for plants within Valenwood, or all plants? Do we just have to assume every PC Bosmer is some sort of outcast or religious vagrant in the eyes of the traditionalists of his people?

What about the Meat Mandate? Is that something that only applies when in Valenwood as well? Is it illegal to eat people you kill if killing them wasn't against the law? (self defense, bandits, ect)
Should we assume Bosmer only eat animal meat when in other provinces?

I was just wondering what peoples take was on these questions, and if there were any other lore references on these subjects.

Most Bosmer do not follow the Green Pact, unless of course you find yourself in Valenwood, where it is always upheld. And to those who do take part in the Green Pact, alchemy is a no-no, however most Bosmer who leave Valenwood to stay elsewhere generally don't follow the Green Pact, meaning most, if not all Bosmer met outside of Valenwood could very well be users of alchemy. As far as the Meat Mandate goes, it is the same as the Green Pact, not all follow it, but to those who do, you will see them eat the people they killed, in any part of Tamriel, but again, most outside of Valenwood do not follow this so it would be uncommon to see such an act.

Thats how I sort of thought it would be. With such a strict, unusual, and taboo lifestyle in Valenwood, I suppose its not surprising that most would abandon these pacts just to help them fit in with the society they moved to.

Presumably the green pact is mostly uphold by the Tribes of Bosmer that left the valenwoods city's for the woods.

I don't see why the couldn't use alchemy, so long as they don't use plant-products. Animal products wouldn't be a problem.

Don't forget minerals. Even Ebony has alchemical properties. Also, as for plant usage, it has always been my understanding that the green-pact doesn't apply to plants from outside valenwood.

Actually it does, It states that Bosmer can't harvest them themselves, they are allowed to use imperial harvested wood to build housing, But it doesn't matter wether the imperials cut it from Cyrodiil or Valenwood. They are just not allowed to do it themselves.

I get the impression that this repressents a liberalist view among the bosmer. If memory serves the (probably more conservative) ones in mixed unit tactics were none to happy too see khajiit assualting their precious trees.

That wouldn't be relevant for a bosmer who wanted to perform alchemy. ONe can always buy ingredients. The Meat mandate would be the real problem.

It does, But the Bosmer aren't really a united people who all follow the same laws and rules, There are city bosmer who follow the greenpact will have no issues with that whatsoever, But indeed, The conservative forests dwellers would be much more strict.

If the above is true then it would be relevant for some, but yes. For some it wouldn't matter.
