[WIP/REL?] Streamsight FPS Adjuster

Post » Wed May 18, 2011 3:36 pm

My system is ATI HD4890 1Gb, AMD Phenom II X4 965 @3.8Ghz, 4Gb 1066 DDR2 memory.

I heard 186.18 drivers for Vista work great with Oblivion, so I tried them and 'lo and behold, I'm running at 50 fps on a core2duo 6750 and a 8500gt,

SkyCaptain has ATI Driver

So

Which Version are you using 9.11 are lastest unless 9.12 are already out (betas are guru3d) ? Somwhere in the 8.X Drivers is when they made some oblivion optimization once again for the newer cards..

I think we have a winner here... :)

I downloaded the 9.11 drivers, I had 9.9 I think. BUT I don?t think this did it. Cause I also allowed Oblivion to make a new ini - still remembered to turn all video settings to the max, like they were.

Before I installed the driver, and made the new ini, I saved looking in certain direction, and noticed the FPS was 26 (it was a "good" direction).

After the driver install (didn?t even reboot since they don?t require you to nowadays) and the new ini: 40FPS. Frigging +14 FPS, which means my system runs the game now over +50% faster!

Overall, what used to be dips to 14FPS are now over 20, and so on - now this is acceptable, average travel FPS 25-30 and 17FPS as "bad" fps, not 12. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions friends, directed me in the right direction. Now I think I actually ffdshow, and it?s active, should probably disable it.

What is it, anyway, all I remember is that I think many movies require it? Is there a "safe" alternative, or do I have to disable it manually everytime I want to play?

EDIT: @shadme: this may not be relevant anymore, but I can?t alt tab without crashing so it?s kinda hard to say..

The ffdshow filter is used to decode video that are encoded with codecs like Xvid and DivX. You don't need to disable it manually every time if you change it's preferences to limit it's usage to your media player. Personally, I don't use the filter at all - KMPlayer all the way :)

As for the CTD on switching, using scanti's OBGE plugin ? That's got that issue.

KMPlayer? Might have to check it out...never heard of it.

It doesn?t CTD when I enter windows, but I can?t get back in game again. So I haven?t extensively monitored...sorry I explained it badly the first time. All in all it seems like it was some problem with my ini - or the GPU driver, that could also affect the CPU load.

this would be aweoms. i miss fps optimizer from morrowind. although to be honest with my "borg cube" computer it wouldnt make a difference however for people with slower machines this would be a God send.

I heard 186.18 drivers for Vista work great with Oblivion, so I tried them and 'lo and behold, I'm running at 50 fps on a core2duo 6750 and a 8500gt, which is far from the best card in the world., with QTP3, fcom, crowded roads, etc. Switching down below 190 drivers does help, as the new ones seem to be incompatible with just about everything.

Really? Wow. I might have to check which driver I have. My system is pretty close to yours. Dual 2.6 GHz processors, Nvidia Geforce 8600, and 4GB Ram. I'm running Vista. With nearly maxed out video settings my FPS is only around 20-30. Much less during combat. And I don't have QTP3, FCOM, or crowded roads.

Glad you fixed your problem Skycaptain! I was about to suggest trying out this program called Gamebooster, which helped me a lot. Also, I know that a lot of different scripts running at once can really tax the CPU. But it looks like it was the driver, eh? Pretty weird...

i had to switch back to those drivers as well although i did it cause fallout 3 runs like crap on the newer drivers. whatever nvidia is doing they better stop it cause its getting really old fast. i understand a bad release once in a while but not driver after driver after driver.

Yep. Every driver recently has been absolutely worthless. Hopefully they get their act together.

I didn?t think about this, since Streamline already has an ingame menu for Streamsight, and my idea was to make the adjustment automatic and base on FPS needs.

Using keys would be totally alternative to this mod, since then you wouldn?t want it to self-adjust. But maybe I?ll add key-control as well.

Fair enough. :) I asked Jaga about this way back when and if I remember correctly it would be difficult to implement. Not 100% sure - it was ages ago. I really like the full manual control from max view distance to min you have with FPS Opt. Anyway, looking forward to this!

@Skycaptain

Would your mod make changes only through using streamsight's function and settings or would it use streamsmooth's function and settings also?
My question is because I don't use streamsmooth and have edited it so it can not run.

This one seems to be directed specifically at Streamsight. Streamsmooth is already dynamic and fully controllable by the player, whereas Streamsight is dependent on making Oblivion.ini changes and OBSE did not have functions to control the ini when Streamsight was created, so it had to be static.

This add-on will enable it to use those new functions to make Streamsight properly dynamic as well.

No, it wasn't released. Maybe Skycaptain will release it after he finishes DR6?
