PC Controller options?

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 8:36 am

I just recently got brink for PC , and plugged in my 360 controller to my computer.

Yet there are no options to configure or even use a controller for this game!

Now i have a few Random points to make to start this discussion on brink and controllers

- they already have the proper controller scheme saved somewhere in order for the game to work on 360 so moving it to the PC shouldn't be an issue as long as proper controller is found.

- Very few games out there lack the ability to plug in a controller especially for FPS

- a common defense against why there shouldn't be a controller option for the PC version is balance issues, but it seems to be backwards, if you have a controller i feel you're actually gimped compared to people who can utilize a mouse and spin 360 degrees with a flick of their wrist where a controller thumb stick is simply not that sensitive. so deciding to use a controller is actually giving others an advantage, and the user should be able to decide whether they want to take this risk or not, i for one do.

to continue with the previous point, as far as i'm aware PSN has the ability to access steam which means brink can be run on steam for both PS3 and PC and i assume game play between consoles is available much like portal 2 co-op , which means that there are already people playing with keyboard and mouse playing against people with controllers, adding them should not be an issue.

- There are some cheesy work a rounds.. for example xpadder ( or something like that ) reads a plugged in controllers and simulates keyboard and mouse movement through the controller.. it's gritty but it gets the job done ( barely ) I cannot play like this anymore though,

- Again i just don't see why they wouldn't include the ability to use a controller if they already have everything setup and configured for 2 consoles that use controllers it just dosn't make sense

So i suggest, brink developers patch for the PC version some controller interface so we are not bound to keyboard and mouse.

Thank you

Agreed. Ive been using Xpadder but still dont have it tweaked just right yet, even then no rumble and no proper stick support(like say, scrolling in menus) is kind of annoying. The only reason I got the PC version was because of the poor local MP support(no split-screen, no LAN) that the 360 version has. I much prefer playing with a controller for FPS or action games as my hands will get cramped up with a mouse, which is why my PC is mainly used for RPGs and RTS games.

I dont mind a PC game being designed for mouse and keyboard only, not at all. But they HAD it in already, and then took it out or disabled it. Like.... why?

I completely agree. The first thing I did on loading up the game was to connect my controller to set up my buttons. I was shocked to see that it didn't support it, as the game was also released on consoles. I really do hope they add the option for this. Being left-handed can svck for PC gamers, and controllers make it soooo much easier :)

1up

a game in 2011 without 360 controller support on a games for windows title, when they went out of their way to design a controller specifically for PC, completely and utterly ridiculous.

I can understand not letting consoles use keyboard and mouse for the advantage that most players wouldn't have but seriously? i can't choose to lose my accuracy for comfort?

you know whoever is working for splash/bethesda, you know this is ridiculous.

There is a thread going on SD's forums about this and we are making some progress, but there still has been no acknowledgment from the devs to this issue. Please check out the thread and let them hear from you! If you make any headway please share here, on the Steam forums or in this thread on Splash Damage's site. Thanks!

I gave this game a few rounds but I simply can't bare to play any more with out a gamepad. I assumed it would support my xbox360 gamepad because it was a multiplatfrom game and had 'Games for Windows' displayed on the box which in every other games for windows game I ever played meant it supported gamepads if appropriate. I even have a quote from an interview with the game director and Splash Damage boss Paul Wedgwood "
“Sometimes, we would play with a 360 controller connected to PC. Other times we would play with mouse and keyboard, just depending on what we felt like. But we had this very definite vision from the beginning that we would be platform agnostic.”

Give me the gamepad support that Paul Wedgewood speaks of and I will play your game until then I will play other games that support gamepads such as hydrophobia and section 8 prejudice.

Like others have said, I've tried a controller by using external programs to read the controller's movements as keyboard actions, and it works well up to a point, but considering this game is also on consoles, I don't see why support wasn't added in the first place. That being said I like using the mouse better, but having the option there is always nice.

Because I like the controller and the game looks infinitely better on my PC? I have every console and do play a lot on my 360, but prefer PC for the visuals whenever I can get a multi-platform game on it. Arkham Asylum, Assassin's Creed, Shift 2, Crysis 2, Portal 2, etc - all work perfectly with the 360 pad out of the box. It's a major screw-up IMO that Brink ignores it ESPECIALLY when Bethesda and SD have been touting using the 360 to play the game for YEARS. I saw the game demo at PAX 09 using the PC build and a pad, and Wedgewood was quoted just two weeks ago about playing the PC build on a 360 pad. What gives? I wish we could at least get a comment from somebody officially. This is ridiculous.

Which program did you use to set up your Nostromo by the way? I can't even get Brink to recognize the 360 pad using the listControllers command in the console. It's like it doesn't exist....

i got some news, a developer posted this in a forum on splash damage

"

Hi all,

As stated earlier in this thread, we do not officially support controllers on PC... however...

If you launch brink through steam with the following launch option (Right click Brink, then Properties\General\Set Launch Options):

+set g_EnablePCControllerInput 1

This will enable the detection of controller devices. As this is an unsupported feature, there are a few things you should be aware of:

1) You will need to create a config to bind the controller inputs to game actions
2) We have only ever used the xbox360 controller this way internally
3) There is no aim-assist in the PC version of the game

I hope this helps!

I'm sure they'll get around to fixing all the glitches from here on in Feather- just a matter of time, we all know that every game they come out with need's our constructive criticism to make it better. Brink is no different, I'm sure SD has been perusing the forums to find out what they can do to make this game a big seller- it's all about the "Benjamin's"

As for the program I use, I have the Nostromo configurator but didn't need it. Just went to "Controls" and started mapping my keys- that simple.
