May we have shield and a polearm combo?

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 11:28 pm

Perhaps.

But that still doesn't mean that they're all used the same way. Very different fighting styles.

Where in gods name are people getting the idea I said they are used the same?

Polearme is a generic grouping of weapon typed that share similar traits, no different then "sword" or "mace" or "shield".

Some people in this thread seriously need to do more research before posting what they believe to be the truth...

There has been a lot of confusion in this thread because people don't know what a polearm actually is.

It is an understandable mistake but it needs to be recognized.

This is a very nice dodge of the issue but nobody ever said they were used the same.

I believe this thread was originally about using the one-handed polearm and shield combo. I still support this idea and would really like to use a polearm (be it a spear or not) with a shield. It would add another unique fighting style to the game that is anything but useless.

its still regurgitating the same old 'we want spears' discussion, there have been too many threads on that . . . its not like the devs arent aware of that idea

Wow this is getting out of hand...

Yes, spears fall into the general category of "Polearms".
Yes, polearmes such as spears are used very differently from polearms such as halberds.
Yes, the effectiveness of polearms such as halbers would be greatly reduced, or downright useless, if wielded in one hand with a shield.

There's a reason why, for example, the Swiss Guard used both hands for their halberds. If wielded like a spear with one hand it would be rather cumbersome and ineffective.
Spears that are used with a shield for fighting are generally rather short when compared to pikes/halberds etc.

And before you say "What about Greek Phalanxes!?! They used rather long spears with shields!". Yeah, well they used them more like a pike is used and together as a unit.
A 3-4 meter long pike (9-12feet) just aint gonna be very usefull when you're alone and someone's trying to gut you with a sword.

Never said that you said that. However, the progression of the thread was the OP saying "I want to use Polearms 1-handed with a shield!", and then the concept being defended by "spears were used that way!"

Well then, I think we all learned something valuable today!

Spear=Type of polearm

Large Polearm+Shield=Unwieldy

Shorter Polearm+Shield=Good! (biased statement)
