What kind of travel system will Skyrim have?

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 2:45 am

I didn't like Morrowinds fast travel system. When I first took a Silt Strider, I thought 'Cool!

When I first saw one, I came from the non-ramp side, identified it as a monster, and of course started attacking it :toughninja: Good thing it wasn't a http://www.netfunny.com/rhf/jokes/98/Jul/gazebo.html
I get to see myself travel across Morrowind!' but ended up thinking 'Well that's lame. I pay for something I can do for free in Oblivion'
In Oblivion, you could Fast Travel to the major cities straight off, but not everywhere in the game. In Skyrim, you will have to 'find' the cities first (although I think they'll still be shown on your map, in a similar vein to Oblivion.) The game is sounding great, so don't let one little thing like Fast Travel get you down and complaining (like most everyone else :stare:)
Remember Bethesda have other people to cater to, those that aren't serious about Roleplaying and suchwhat. And, as long as there's still horses, and I can walk to the next city, I'm fine
:tes:

Erm, serious and roleplaying have subjective definitions. Yours doesn't match mine, but I'm serious about my roleplaying (pnp)

Regarding fast travel. As long as I don't have to sped time trudging over the same path time and time again, I'll be happy. I havn't seent it yet, but an inclusion of random encoutners could make fast travel a bit more intersting.

Sigh, I though Fast Travel was going to be a Dragon Shout ability that zipped you through the sky where you see everything distorted like "warp speed" It'd be great! Dragons might still be able to combat you, you could miss your target and lad on a cliff face (fall to your death), scare the crap out of citizen (AHH a DRAGON ... NO it's just me the DragonBor...SEEE ITS A DRAGON KILLL IT)....and so on

Much humor, death, immersion, could be included that way LOL

I hope you're kidding...
Oblivion's system wasn't that bad. It takes the same amount of in game time to get there, you just don't have to spend the real time retracing a path you've already gone over before. And I think traveling at Ludicrous Speed should be something that stays in Spaceballs >_>

Fast travel and the compass both need to go.

Ehh, a bit too far IMO. Taking stuff out altogether is a pretty good way to alienate folks. Instead, make it a toggle-able feature. 'Course, could just opt to not use fast travel... Worked for me in Oblivion.

The only complaint people have about the compass is the quest marker. It probably will be gone however, since it's been said that the HUD will only appear when needed (so I'm assuming when you take damage/cast spell/sprint or attack). I think because of this the compass will be gone, or at least toggle-able into being off.

And if you say something like "fast travel in its entirety needs to go," which is what I'm assuming you meant by that vague statement, explain why. I think most people like some form of fast travel in the game, the debate being whether it's the style found in Morrowind or a variant of the style found in every other Elder Scrolls game.

Aye, somewhat kidding.

A bit of humor (fast travel threads are always so rancorous) while presenting some fodder for ideas. Why can't there be some risk added into fast travel? (nods to that camp) Why can't it macth the game setting? (nods to that crowd) Why can't it be original? (nods to that crowd) Why can't it still be a teleport? (nods to that crowd) Why can't you get lost while doing it (landing off target and nods to the exploration camp).

Ah, Ludicrous Speed :) Good movie! (Ebert gives it a

Haha, alright. I can see where you're coming from now. I wouldn't mind seeing something to the Daggerfall system of fast travel, which is somewhat similar to what you've suggested, as long as it's implemented well.

Oblivion needed fast travel because it was actually Boring as hell between cities (Half of the time) Where as Morrowind's travel system wasn't entirely necessary, usually you came across plenty of distractions th- Oh a tomb *enters* ... anyway, I just think while I don't entirely mind fast travel that much, Oblivion's just added to it's re-occurring "I'll do this for you because your too lazy and can't read" theme.

Morrowind was more or less "Stop whining and get on that silt strider, 10g won't kill you" However while Silt Striders, Boats & Mages Guilds + Divine/Almsivi intervention spells were really good, Morrowind's travel system only became perfect with the "All Silt Strider" and "All Boat Ports" mods that erased the need to go from city to city just go get where you need to, personally I think this little hiccup is what makes people dislike Morrowind's system (Especially those who played Oblivion first)

My view is, yes remove the easy map travel, bring back actual travel services but make sure all destinations for that service are listed, not just some for this boat and others or that boat. etc.

The most annoying thing about Silt riders was the fact that not all the towns (mainly the imperial ones) had it, and you had to find a different way, or even worse get there on foot, which wouldn't be that bad if walking wouldn't be so damn slow in Morrowind.
